Rockford tops Muskegon 4-2

Rockford, Ill.- The 2005-06 United Hockey League season came to a close and the Rockford IceHogs topped the Muskegon Fury 4-2 in front of 4,048 at the Rockford MetroCentre. Winger Greg Barber, who was named co-MVP along with Preston Mizzi before the game, netted a pair of goals and had an assist to lead the IceHogs. Rockford now gets set for the Colonial Cup Playoffs where they will face the Fort Wayne Komets.

Rockford exploded in the first frame and netted all four of its goals in the games first 13:07. Rookie center Steve Yetman netted his 19th marker of the campaign at 1:13 to start the scoring, giving Rockford the 1-0 edge. Then at 8:02, rookie defenseman Ryan Carrigan blasted in a short-handed marker past Nick Boucher to put Rockford up 2-0.

Barber later finished the first period scoring with two goals. The winger's first came at 9:29 on the power play, beating Boucher to up the lead to three. Barber gave Rockford a four-goal cushion with his second of the period and 26th of the campaign at 13:07.

Muskegon attempted a comeback getting tallies in the second and third frame. The first came from rookie winger David Wrigley at 16:59, beating Hogs goalie Brendan Cuthbert over the shoulder for his 42nd of the campaign. In the final frame, Rustyn Dolyny cut the Rockford lead to 4-2 after he hammered home a goal off of a face-off at 18:17.

Cuthbert picked up his second win in an IceHogs uniform, turning away 32 Muskegon shots. Boucher responded after a shaky start to stop 37 Rockford attempts in the loss. The Hogs finished 1-for-7 on the power play while Muskegon went 1-for-5.
