Richmond Roosters News Release

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters lost 17-13 in an offensive battle Thursday night. Richmond fell behind to Rockford several times throughout the game, but continued to rally, but four runs for RiverHawks in the 11th inning were too much.

The Roosters introduced new acquisition, Rick Weber, to Frontier League baseball by immediately placing him on the mound to start the game. Weber, a product of Olivet Nazarene University, signed with Richmond earlier in the day then made his first professional start a few hours later. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs in his debut.

The RiverHawks struck quickly with a two-run homer in the first inning from Shaff Elkouri for an early 2-0 lead. The Roosters got one run back in the bottom of the second with a solo home run by Tony Sanguinetti, his fifth, to make it a 2-1 game. Rockford tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth with a RBI double by Ryan Larson and a RBI single by Mike Lynch for a 4-1 score. Sanguinetti got his second bomb of night in the sixth, scoring Hector Urena and Kevin White for a three-run homer. That tied the game at 4-4, but Rockford broke the tie in the top of the seventh. Four runs scored in the inning to give the RiverHawks an 8-4 lead. Josh Hollingsworth got his eighth home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth, a solo shot to gain a run, but the RiverHawks got two more runs in the ninth to extend the lead to 12-5.

The Roosters rallied from seven runs down with a RBI double by Hollingsworth and a RBI single by Gerald Miller. Brian Baker was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a third run and close the gap to 12-8. Joe Cuervo then stepped up to bat and smacked a grand slam over the wall to tie the game up. Rockford got a run in the top of the 10th but the Roosters came right back and tied it again in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Kevin White to force 11 innings. Four RiverHawks scored in the top of the 11th to lead 17-13, then shutout the Roosters in the bottom of the inning to send Richmond to the defeat.

The Roosters (7-14) begin a series at Kalamazoo (14-7) on Friday. Jared Howton (1-1) will start for the Roosters. Game time is scheduled for 5:35pm (Indiana time) at Homer Stryker Field.
