ROCKFORD, Ill. - Three Rockford errors in the top of the sixth inning allowed the Washington Wild Things to pull away and beat the RiverHawks, 6-4.
Chris Carter broke a 1-1 tie with a RBI groundout in the top of the third and the Wild Things led the rest of the way.
Andy Hudak led off the Washington sixth with his first home run, off Rockford starter Kevin Crowley (0-1). Rockford shortstop Olmo Rosario compounded the damage when he misplayed Ryan McGraw's two-out grounder into a run-scoring error. McGraw later scored on another error.
Washington starter Ryan Douglass (4-1) retired eight in a row and pitched into the seventh inning for the win. Gooby Gerlits singled in two runs to cut the deficit to 6-3 and knock out Douglass. Closer Jim Popp came in and stranded two runners in each of the final three innings to earn his fourth save.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Dr Pepper/7-Up and WZOK sponsor Youth Replica Jersey Night. The first 1,000 youths through the gate get a replica jersey.
