
Rock Cats waste comeback attempt

New Britain, CT - New Britain scored four runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and tie the game only to watch Portland walk away with a 7-6 victory.
Rock Cats reliever Armando Gabino, who entered the game in the sixth, issued three-straight walks to start the seventh inning. Daeges popped out to catcher Jeff Christy before Bates' sacrifice fly scored Tony Granadillo for the go-ahead run. Gabino (3-3, 2.96) suffered the loss after walking a total of four batters and striking out one in 1 1/3 innings. Portland tacked on two more runs off Kyle Aselton. Mickey Hall had an RBI sac fly in the eighth and Daeges added another RBI double in the ninth that proved to be the eventual game-winning run.
Portland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Jeff Corsaletti drew a walk to leadoff the inning and moved up to third on an errant pick-off attempt by Anthony Swarzak.
The Sea Dogs received back-to-back RBI doubles from Zachary Daeges and Aaron Bates in the third for a 3-0 lead. Daeges added another RBI double in the fifth inning.
Portland starter Michael Bowden, one of the Red Sox' top pitching prospects, cruised through the first five innings. Bowden allowed leadoff singles to Steve Tolleson and Brock Peterson in the first two innings, but both base runners were thrown out trying to steal second.
The Rock Cats finally got to Bowden in the sixth inning. Jeff Christy started the inning off with a single to center field and Dustin Martin followed with a one-out walk. Erik Lis then doubled to right field to knock in both runners. Daniel Hagwood came on in relief for Bowden and allowed an RBI double by Peterson. Matt Moses followed with a triple to right field that scored Peterson and tied the game, 4-4.
The Rock Cats nearly came back again in the bottom of the ninth. The Rock Cats struck Beau Vaughan for two runs on three hits in the ninth. Matt Moses led off the inning with a walk and Trevor Plouffe followed with a double to deep right field. Pinch hitter David Winfree then knocked in Moses with a single and Tolleson added an RBI single. Vaughan held on to pick up his fourth save.
Daeges finished the day with three hits - all doubles - with three RBI and a run scored. Bowden limited the Rock Cats to five hits and three runs through 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. Daniel Haigwood (1-0, 2.08 picked up the win despite allowing one run and two hits in just 1/3 inning.
Swarzak left the game after 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.
