Portland Holds Off The Rock Cats, 7-6

(New Britain, CT) - Aaron Bates snapped a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as the Portland Sea Dogs (25-17) beat the New Britain Rock Cats 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Portland takes two of three from the Rock Cats and improved to 4-2 on their 9-game roadtrip.
The Rock Cats rallied for two runs off Beau Vaughan in the 9th inning but left runners at first and third to end the game. Vaughan ended the rally by retiring Dustin Martin and Luke Hughes to notch his fourth save of the season.
Zach Daeges went 3-for-5 and tied a franchise record by clubbing three doubles. Daeges knocked in a run with each double, including, 2 run-scoring two-baggers with two outs.
Daniel Haigwood (1-0) earned his first decision of the year despite allowing the tying run in the sixth inning. Kyle Jackson worked a scoreless frame and Daniel Bard made his Double-A debut in the eighth and struck out the side. Bard threw 15 pitches and hasn't allowed a run in 15 of 16 appearances between Lancaster and Portland.
Portland jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Anthony Swarzak. Iggy Suarez knocked in the first run with a run-scoring groundout in the first. In the third, Daeges and Bates had back-to-back 2-out RBI doubles. Daeges added his second 2-out run-scoring double in the fifth inning, scoring Tony Granadillo.
Michael Bowden cruised through the first five innings but left the game in the sixth inning after a 2-run double by Erik Lis. New Britain tied the game off Haigwood, receiving a wall-ball RBI double from Brock Peterson and an RBI triple by Matt Moses. Bowden worked 5 and 2/3 innings on five hits, three runs, two walks and six strikeouts.
Portland took the lead for good in the late frames, adding singles runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
The Sea Dogs are off on Monday and travel to Manchester, NH on Tuesday night to battle the Fisher Cats. LHP Kris Johnson (3-1, 3.69) takes on LHP Ricky Romero (2-2, 6.55) - game time is 6:35 PM.
Notes...Sunday's game took 3 hours and 51 minutes - a franchise record for a 9-inning game...Suarez, Daeges and Bates combined for 6 RBI...Tony Granadillo reached base three times with a double and 2 walks...Portland has scored 18 runs with 2-outs on the trip and 88 on the season.
