EMPIRE STATE OF MIND: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series against Empire State (Yankees), continuing a 6-game homestand that started with a 9-2 loss in last night's opener. Following 3 more with the Yankees, the Red Wings will welcome Pawtucket (Red Sox) to town for a brief 2-game set Friday-Saturday and then hit the road for a 2-game trip to Lehigh Valley (Phillies) Sunday-Monday.

a Thursday's game against Empire State will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports.

a Following this series, the Red Wings and Yankees will play a 2-game set August 18-19 to close out the season series.

WECOME BACK, CAL: The Red Wings tonight welcome back Cal Ripken Jr. to Frontier Field, the ballpark he called home in 1981 before embarking on his 21-year Hall of Fame career with the Baltimore Orioles. Ripken, who established a major league record by playing in 2,632 consecutive games, is in Rochester to be inducted to the International League Hall of Fame. The former Red Wing was a in the 2011 induction class, but he hadn't been a part of an official ceremony until tonight.

a Ripken batted .288 with 31 doubles, 23 homers, and 75 RBI in 114 games with Red Wings in 1981 to earn IL Rookie of the Year honors.

a Ripken ranks 14th on Major League Baseball's all-time hits list with 3,184. He ranks 42nd on the all-time home run list with 431. He is also one of only 8 players in history with 3,000 hits and 400 homers.

AW, MAN: The Red Wings' winning streak came to an end at 7 games with yesterday's 9-2 loss vs. Empire State. The 7-game winning streak was the club's longest a 7-game tear June 19-23, 2007. That streak included a pair of doubleheader sweeps June 22 and 23 against Charlotte at Knights Stadium.

a Following Sunday's 19-inning game at Toledo, manager Gene Glynn last night summoned outfielder Matt Carson and catcher Rene Rivera to pitch the 8th and 9th innings, respectively. It marked Carson's first appearance on the mound since August 11, 2009 with Triple-A Sacramento (A's). He actually pitched 6 times for the River Cats that year. Rivera, meanwhile, last night made his first career appearance on the mound and threw 10 pitches, all for strikes.

SIMPLY THE BEST: The Red Wings are a league-best 22-12 beginning July 1, 2.0 games better than the next closest team Columbus (Indians). A look at the best records in the IL since the start of July:

WINNING WAYS: At 59-57, the Red Wings are off to their best 116-game start since 2007, when they were 63-53. The 2011 club was 26 games under .500 at 45-71 at this point last season and finished 53-91. The 2010 team was 34 games below .500 at 41-75 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.

HOME, HOME ON THE RANGE: The Red Wings at Frontier Field are 36-27, a record that includes a 4-4 mark as the "road" team against Empire State. With 36 victories, the Wings have already eclipsed their win total at the downtown ballpark from last year. The 2011 Red Wings went 32-41 in 73 games, including one as the "road" team against Charlotte.

a The 36 home wins are Rochester's most since 2009, when they went 36-36 along Morrie Silver Way. The Red Wings' next win at home would give them their most victories at Frontier in one season since going 46-26 in 2008.

a Rochester has lost 3 straight games at Frontier Field. The Wings' longest losing streak at Frontier is 5 games from April 25-May 2.

PITCHING IN: Going back to the multi-talented Matt Carson and Rene Rivera, the Red Wings have used 31 different pitchers in 2012. That is the most in one season for the Red Wings since the 1995 club, led by Marv Foley, used 34 different hurlers en route to going 73-69 and earning a berth in the IL East Championship Series. Rochester used 28 pitchers all of last year.

CLOSING IN: Gene Glynn will manage his 500th career game Thursday vs. Empire State. The Waseca, Minnesota native skippered 381 minor league games over 5 seasons from 1986-92 before returning to the managerial ranks in 2012 with the Red Wings. Glynn has a career record of 249-248.

STILL A BEAST: Chris Parmelee went 0-for-3 with a walk yesterday vs. Empire State to snap his 15-game hitting streak, which is the longest of his pro career and the longest by a Red Wing since Danny Valencia's 20-gamer April 24-May 16, 2010.

a Parmelee's RBI streak also ended at 10 games, which is the longest by a Red Wing since at least 2001.

a Parmelee is batting .353 (36-for-102) with 7 doubles, 8 homers, 22 RBI, 20 walks, and a .463 on-base percentage in 26 games since being optioned from Minnesota July 5.

LIAM ON ME: Liam Hendriks, tonight's starting pitcher, leads the Red Wings with 8 wins. That is the highest total in a season for a Red Wings pitcher since 2008, when Philip Humber and Francisco Liriano both posted 10.

a Hendriks would rank 2nd in the IL with his 2.32 ERA if he had enough innings to qualify.
