Rochester Red Wings News Release
SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2012 w COCA-COLA PARK
GAME #122 - ROAD GAME #62 - 5:35 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (61-60) at LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (65-57)
RHP LIAM HENDRIKS (8-2, 2.14) vs. RHP SCOTT ELARTON (5-9, 5.27)
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin a 2-game roadtrip and series at Lehigh Valley (Phillies), their 3rd and final regular-season visit to Coca-Cola Park. The Red Wings are coming off a 2-4 homestand in which they lost 3 of 4 vs. Empire State (Yankees) and split a 2-game set vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox). Rochester returns to Frontier Field on Tuesday for a 6-game homestand, which includes a 4-game series vs. Indianapolis (Pirates) and a 2-game set vs. Empire State.
a The Red Wings are 6 games into a stretch of playing 18 of their final 29 games at Frontier Field. All but 4 of Rochester's final 29 contests are against International League North Division rivals as well, the lone exception that series against Indianapolis.
ROSTER NEWS: Infielder Trevor Plouffe yesterday began a rehab assignment with the Red Wings. The 26-year-old is currently on the 15-Day Disabled List with a bruised right thumb. He played 4 seasons with the Red Wings from 2008-11, appearing in 337 games and batting .262 with 46 homers and 181 RBI. Plouffe made his major league debut with the Twins in 2011 and has spent the entire 2012 season with the big league club. He is batting .259 with 19 homers and 38 RBI in 74 games with Minnesota this year.
a Also over the last 2 days, infielder Sean Burroughs was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List with a lower back injury, lefthander Luke French was transferred to Double-A New Britain, and righthander Eric Hurley was released.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Red Wings enter tonight's game at Lehigh Valley with a 7-game road winning streak, their longest since a 7-game tear July 16-29, 2000. A victory tonight would give Rochester its longest road winning streak since at least 1987 (more research needed).
a The Red Wings are just 23-30 in true road games, but they have won 7 straight, 11 of their last 15, and 12 of their last 17 away from Frontier Field.
HANGING IN THERE: Despite going 2-4 on their recently-completed homestand, the Red Wings still have the best record in the IL beginning July 1 at 24-15, 1.0 game ahead of Columbus (Indians). A look at the Top-5 records since the start of July:
Rank Team Record Win %
1. 24-15 .615
2. A0 23-16 .590
3. Empire A0 20-16 .556
T4. Norfolk (Orioles) 21-17 .553
Charlotte (White Sox) 21-17 .553
a The Red Wings are 41-30 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 47-37 beginning May 15 and 52-44 beginning May 3.
WINNING WAYS: At 61-60, the Red Wings are off to their best 121-game start since 2007, when they were 66-55. The 2011 club was 29 games under .500 at 46-75 at this point last season and finished 53-91. The 2010 team was 31 games below .500 at 45-76 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.
a The Red Wings are looking for their first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70. Rochester needs to win 12 of its final 23 games to finish above .500.
LET'S DO THIS: At 5-6, the Red Wings need to win 4 of their last 5 games against Lehigh Valley to get a season series win, which would be their first since the 2008 club went 11-5 against the IronPigs. After these 2 games at Coca-Cola Park, where the Red Wings are just 1-5 this year, the 2 teams will meet for 3 at Frontier Field August 22-24.
a The Red Wings have lost 12 of 14 games at Coca-Cola Park since the start of the 2011 season.
a Rochester is just 24-37 within the division, yet is 37-23 against teams outside the IL North. The Wings currently have a losing record against each of the North rivals: Buffalo (4-5), Empire State (6-8), Lehigh Valley (5-6), Pawtucket (6-8), and Syracuse (3-10).
START ME UP: Red Wings' starting pitchers are winless in the last 8 games, going 0-1 with a 7.76 ERA (25 ER/29.0 IP) in that time. The last starter to garner a win was Shairon Martis August 3 at Toledo (Tigers).
a Red Wings starters have 32 wins overall, 17 of which are attached to pitchers now with Minnesota.
a Tonight's starter, Liam Hendriks, leads the team with 8 wins, which are the most in one season by a Red Wings' pitcher since 2008, when Philip Humber and Francisco Liriano both had 10.
MORE RUNS NEEDED: This 2-game series at Coca-Cola Park features the 2 lowest-scoring teams in the league. The Red Wings have scored a league-low 464 runs, while Lehigh Valley has the 2nd-lowest total with 481. Only these 2 teams and Louisville (Reds) with 488 have yet to reach the 500-run plateau in the IL.
a Rochester scored 5 runs or less in each of the 6 games of the recently-completed homestand. The Wings scored 5 or more in 6 of 8 games on their last roadtrip.
DON'T MISS CHRIS: Chris Parmelee has 9 home runs in his last 16 games beginning July 26, the most in the IL in that time and 4 ahead of the next closest players. His 19 RBI in that same span are the most in the IL as well, 2 ahead of Syracuse's (Nationals) Carlos Rivero. Parmelee hit his team-leading 13th homer Friday vs. Pawtucket, a 2-run shot off the rehabbing Daisuke Matsuzaka. He leads the team despite playing in just 46 games, less than a 3rd of the 2012 schedule.
