Yankees Shutout Chiefs in Game Two 1-0, Split Twin-Bill

August 12, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Syracuse, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee second baseman Corban Joseph is known for his bat and he showed just how dangerous he is at the plate with a solo blast in the top half of the third inning in a game two victory in a twin bill against the Syracuse Chiefs at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Yankees and Chiefs split the doubleheader with Syracuse taking game one by a score of 3-1 on Sunday night.

The Chiefs had two excellent chances to score in game two of the doubleheader. It all started in the home half of the first inning when Eury Perez led off the ballgame with a bunt single to the right side. Perez eventually ended up on third with just one out in the inning, but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Chase Whitley got Jarrett Hoffpauir to bounce out to third and struck out Carlos Rivero to get out of the inning unscathed. Whitley cruised from there allowing just two hits over four innings, while striking out four and walking just one.

The Chiefs threatened again in the bottom half of the sixth, due to some superior speed from Perez who again reached on an infield single. Jim Negrych then sacrificed Perez to second and then moved over to third on a wild pitch. However, Manny Delcarmen reached back and got two strikeouts to once again preserve the Yankee lead as the teams headed to the seventh. Delcarmen got the win for the Yankees, while Juan Cedeno picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

Despite a six inning complete game effort from starting pitcher Adam Warren (6-8), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the loss in game one of the twin bill. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out five Chiefs. The Yankees did strike first in game one on a Joseph solo shot over the right field wall. However, Joseph's ninth homer of the season was all the Yankees could bring across the plate, while Syracuse scored one run in the second and two in the third to take the game 3-1. Yunesky Maya (11-8) was magnificent in a five-inning shutout. He allowed just three hits on one run, while striking out one and walking none. Former Yankee farmhand Christian Garcia picked up his ninth save of the season with a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

The Yankees and Chiefs take the field again tomorrow night for the series, and season finale in Syracuse. The Yankees send left-hander Mike O'Connor (2-6, 3.76) to the bump, while fellow left-hander John Lannan (7-10, 5.03) gets the nod for the Chiefs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
