Rochester Red Wings News Release
FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2012 w COCA-COLA PARK
GAME #81 - ROAD GAME #43 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (37-43) at LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (45-34)
LHP LUKE FRENCH (1-3, 5.84) vs. RHP SCOTT ELARTON (5-5, 4.44)
FIT FOR A SPLIT: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the finale of their 4-game series at Lehigh Valley (Phillies), looking for a split before hopping on the overnight bus back to Rochester. The Red Wings tomorrow return to Frontier Field for a 2-game series against the Empire State Yankees. Then it's back on the road for a 2-game set at Pawtucket (Red Sox) Monday-Tuesday. Rochester on Wednesday begins a 6-game homestand that leads into the All-Star Break, featuring a pair of 3-game series vs. Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley.
a The Red Wings and IronPigs will play a doubleheader on July 8, the last day of action before the All-Star Break. Gametime is 12:05 p.m.
NEWS OF THE DAY: The Red Wings yesterday announced the celebration "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," a month-long initiative in July at Frontier Field to inspire women in the Rochester area to support baseball and community. For a $35 registration fee, fans can walk around the warning track at Frontier Field with the women of the Red Wings' front office every business day from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. The fee also includes participation in a baseball clinic with Red Wings' players and coaches on August 18, one raffle ticket for the grand-prize $3,000 diamond baseball necklace from West and Company, 2 tickets to a game featuring the Red Wings or Empire State Yankees, and a "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" limited-edition pink t-shirt.
a All monies will be donated to United Way of Greater Rochester. The drawing for the diamond necklace, which is being created by jeweler David Nytch specifically for this occasion, will be held at the Red Wings' game on August 10 vs. Pawtucket.
I SEE A TREND DEVELOPING: The Red Wings are 2-2 in their last 4 games, 3-3 in their 6 contests, 4-4 in their last 8, 6-6 in their last 12, 8-8 in their last 16, 10-10 in their last 20, and 17-17 in their last 34. Rochester also is 28-27 beginning May 3. The Red Wings are 17-13, though, since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 following a 4-1 loss at Charlotte (White Sox) May 28.
a The Red Wings are 15-12 in June with 2 games remaining in the month, assuring themselves of their first winning record in a calendar month since going 17-15 in August 2009.
a At 15-12, the Red Wings have their best record of any calendar month this season, yet have their highest ERA of any month at 4.44 (116 ER/235.0 IP). Rochester has scored 100 runs in 27 games in June, however, for their highest monthly average of 3.7 runs per game. The Wings averaged 3.1 runs per game in April (71 runs in 23 games) and 3.4 runs in May (103 runs in 30 games).
ROAD SCHOLARS NEEDED: The Red Wings are an International League-worst 11-23 in true road contests, a total that doesn't include a 4-4 mark as the "road" team against Empire State at Frontier Field. A win tonight at Lehigh Valley would give Rochester a split of the 4-game series, avoiding its 8th road series loss in 10 tries. The Red Wings' 2 road series wins came at Syracuse (Nationals), a sweep of a 2-game set to open the season, and at Louisville (Reds) June 14-17, when they took 3 of 4.
a The Red Wings pitching staff has given up 10 or more runs in 3 of its last 5 road games, including 10 last night at Lehigh Valley.
a The Red Wings have a 5.31 ERA (168 ER/284.2 IP) in 34 true road games in 2012. They have a 3.10 ERA (139 ER/403.0 IP) in 46 games at Frontier Field. The Wings are 26-20 at the downtown ballpark, and they are unbeaten in 10 of their 13 series there, going 6-3-4.
BABY STEPS: At 37-43, the Red Wings are 6 games better than they were at this point last year (31-49) and 7 games better than they were in 2010 (30-50). Rochester is off to its best 80-game start since going 39-41 in 2009.
a With Monday's win vs. Charlotte, the Red Wings guaranteed themselves their most wins entering the All-Star break since 2009, when they were 44-44 going into the Mid-Summer Classic. Rochester was 33-59 at the break in 2010 and 35-55 in 2011.
PITCH FORKED: The Red Wings entered play June 10 at Indianapolis ranked 3rd in the IL with a 3.45 ERA. In 18 games beginning June 10, the Red Wings have posted a 5.37 ERA (93 ER/156.0 IP) to drop to tied for 9th in the league with a 4.02 ERA with Empire State. Rochester is 8-10 in that period.
a Red Wings' starters are just 4-9 with a 7.07 ERA (60 ER/76.1 IP) in 18 games beginning June 10, the day after Liam Hendriks made his final start with the Red Wings before getting recalled to Minnesota.
a Red Wings' starters are 21-26 with a 4.24 ERA (186 ER/395.0 IP) overall.
a Red Wings' left-handed starters are 5-8 with a 5.80 ERA (67 ER/104.0 IP) in 22 games. The group comprises of Scott Diamond, Luke French, and Matt Maloney. Diamond, who is now with the Twins, went 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA in 6 starts with the Red Wings. French and Maloney are a combined 1-7 with a 7.40 ERA (57 ER/69.1 IP) in their 16 starts.
FIRST THING'S FIRST: The Red Wings have been outscored 17-6 in the first inning in their last 10 games, including being outscored 9-3 in 3 games during this series at Lehigh Valley. In the last 10 games, Rochester has fallen in a 3-0 hole in the first inning vs. Durham June 19 and June 21, a 2-0 hole Sunday vs. Charlotte, a 5-1 hole Tuesday and a 4-0 hole yesterday at Lehigh Valley.
a The Wings have been outscored 42-35 in the first inning overall.
POWER OUTAGE: The Red Wings have gone 5 straight games without a home run. Their last homer came off the bat of Danny Valencia, an 8th-inning solo blast off Charlotte's (White Sox) Dan Remenowsky Saturday at Frontier Field. Rochester's season-worst homer drought is 8 games from April 29-May 7. That was the club's longest since another 8-gamer May 24-June 1, 2010.
a The Wings have hit 45 home runs overall, the 2nd-lowest total in the IL ahead of only Indianapolis' (Pirates) 42.
