Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - For the second consecutive night the Yankees offense produce double digits in the run department. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense scored early and often en route to an 11-4 victory over the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.
The Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first on a Corban Joseph RBI and a long two-run shot off the bat of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre first basemen Russell Branyan. The Braves responded with two runs of their own in the top half of second. Christian Marerro provided the first run with an RBI single to right and later in the inning Felix Pie scored on double play off the bat of Josh Wilson.
The Braves didn't stay long as Branyan started a two-out, four run rally with an RBI single to left field. Brandon Laird then followed with an RBI double to the right field wall making it a 5-2 ball game. But, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasn't done yet as Gustavo Molina capped the four run inning with a two-RBI single to left field, which extended the Yankee lead to 7-2 after just three innings of play.
Jack Cust continues to produce in the month of June. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee designated hitter crushed his second home run in as many nights, this time a three-run shot over the right-centerfield wall. It was his 18th homer of the year and gave the Yankees a 1-2 advantage after four innings.
Gwinnett got one back in the top half of the seventh when Jose Yepez came in from third to score on a double play off the bat of Luis Durango. Gwinnett added another run in the top half of the eighth on a Josh Wilson RBI single.
Doug Bernier entered the game in Branyan's spot and ended a seven game hitless streak with an RBI single off the left field wall, which scored Mustelier from third after tripling earlier in the inning. Bernier's RBI single gave the Yankees more than enough runs, extending their lead to 11-4 after eight innings of play.
Nelson Figueroa picked up the win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, improving to 5-2. In his return to the rotation, the veteran right-hander allowed two runs on three hits, while walking three and striking four over five innings. Jose Lugo was credited with the loss for the Braves as he allowed nine runs on six hits in five innings on the bum
