LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (71-63) vs. ROCHESTER RED WINGS (67-66)
RHP TYSON BRUMMETT (3-4, 3.39) vs. RHP P.J. WALTERS (3-1, 2.68)
FRIDAY FIREWORKS: The Rochester Red Wings tonight close out their 3-game series and homestand against Lehigh Valley (Phillies), trailing International League Wild Card-leading Pawtucket (Red Sox) by 4.0 games with 11 remaining. The Red Wings tomorrow hit the road for a 5-game series at Buffalo (Mets), a set that includes a doubleheader Sunday. After an offday Wednesday, the Red Wings return home Thursday for a 2-game set against the same Bisons.
a All but one of Rochester's final 11 games can be seen on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS) Channel 26. The lone exception is September 1, when Syracuse University opens its football season against Northwestern University.
a The Wings are 6 games into a stretch of playing their final 17 contests against IL North opponents and they are 2-4 thus far. Rochester is just 27-42 against its division rivals overall. The Wings went 40-24 outside the IL North.
ROSTER NEWS: Following last night's game, the Minnesota Twins recalled right-handed reliever Kyle Waldrop. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, the Twins optioned outfielder Matt Carson to Triple-A Rochester. This is Waldrop's 2nd stint with the Twins in 2012. Carson, meanwhile, batted .381 (8-for-21) with a double and an RBI in 5 games after having his contract selected August 17. It was Carson's first major league action since 2010 with Oakland.
a Righthander P.J. Walters tonight makes his 7th rehab start since being placed on the 15-Day DL June 14 with right shoulder inflammation, his 5th in his most recent rehab stint. In his 4 most-recent rehab starts, has allowed 2 runs and 9 hits in 8.0 innings.
a Righthander Kyle Gibson tomorrow will start at Buffalo for his first Triple-A appearance since having "Tommy John" ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow last September. Gibson, who was selected by the Twins in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2009 draft, made 9 rehab appearances with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Twins and then 2 starts with Single-A Fort Myers.
a Gibson will become the 18th different starting pitcher used by the Red Wings, matching the total from all of last year.
TURNAROUND TIME: The Red Wings yesterday won for just the 2nd time in their last 7 games, avoiding falling below .500 for the first time since July 31 and snapping a 4-game home losing streak. The Wings also gained a game on each of the 4 teams ahead of them in the IL Wild Card standings.
a The Red Wings tonight look to win 2 in a row for the first time in more than a week. They last won at least 2 straight August 14-16, when they won 3 in a row vs. Indianapolis (Pirates).
a Rochester is 8-10 since their season-best 7-game winning streak July 29-August 5. Despite the recent downturn, the Red Wings are still 47-36 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 53-43 beginning May 15.
WE CAN DO THIS: The Red Wings in 2012 are looking for their first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70. Rochester needs to win 6 of its final 11 games to finish above .500.
a The Red Wings have just 4 games remaining at Frontier Field, where they are 42-34. The 42 wins along Morrie Silver Way are the club's most since going 46-26 in 2008.
DOING ITS PART: Despite being just 12-10 in August, the Red Wings pitching staff has a 3.45 ERA (79 ER/206.0 IP) during the month. That is good for their lowest ERA of any calendar month this season, ahead of April's 3.73 ERA (82 ER/197.2 IP).
POWER SUPPLY: The Red Wings have hit 21 home runs in August, tied with Durham (Rays) for the 2nd most in the IL, one behind Empire State (Yankees). Chris Parmelee, who hit his team-leading 17th homer last night, leads the league with 8 homers in August, one ahead of Louisville's (Reds) Denis Phipps.
a Parmelee and Wilkin Ramirez last night hit consecutive homers in the 7th inning for the Rochester's 4th set of back-to-back homers. Paremelee has hit his 17 homers in just 58 games and 209 at-bats, an average of one every 12.3 at-bats.
A SPECIAL RAY: Ray Chang today celebrates his 29th birthday. He shares his special day with fellow ballplayers Rafael Furcal, Brett Gardner, Cal Ripken Jr., and Tim Salmon, as well as Dave Chappelle and Vince McMahon. Chang is 2-for-17 (.118) with a double and 2 RBI in 5 games on his birthday in his pro career.
CUP RUNNETH OVER: The Red Wings tomorrow resume the hotly-contested battle for the Thruway Series Cup presented by Hillside Family of Agencies, the 3-team race for the best record in western New York among Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. Here are the current standings, which reflect only games against one another:
Rank Team Record Winning %
1. Buffalo 15-10 .600
2. Syracuse 16-13 .552
3. Rochester 7-15 .318
a Each of Rochester's last 10 games are against these 2 rivals, including 5 with Buffalo and 3 with Syracuse.
