Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Buffalo, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (79-56) finished the regular season series with the Buffalo Bisons (62-72) by winning the final seven games between the two teams capping off the season series with a 6-4 win at Coca-Cola Field on Friday night. The Yankees won the season series by taking 11 of 16 games with the Bisons and won their ninth straight game for the teams longest win streak since the 2008 season.
The Yankees jumped on Bisons starter Jeurys Familia (LP, 8-9) with four runs in the first inning and one more in the second inning pounding out 10 hits on route to a 5-0 lead. After Chris Dickerson led off the first with a single, Corban Joseph launched his 13th homer of the season deep over the wall in right and the Yankees grabbed a 2-0 lead. After Eduardo Nunez doubled and Ronnier Mustelier singled Nunez to third, the first of two Familia wild pitches during the at bat with Brandon Laird moved Mustelier to second. The second wild pitch of the inning scored Nunez from third and moved Mustelier from second to third and SWB led 3-0. Laird's grounder to shortstop with the infield back scored Mustelier for a 4-0 lead. Joseph was back at it again in the second inning increasing the Yankees lead to 5-0 with his third RBI of the night. His RBI double over the bag at first scored Dickerson who led off the second inning with a single.
The Bisons picked up two unearned runs off SWB starter John Maine (WP, 7-5) in the bottom of the third inning. Fred Lewis picked up a one out single to left field for his second hit of the night. He moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored the first run for the Bisons when Maine threw away Lucas Duda's potential inning ending ground ball back to the mound. Duda advanced to second base on Maine's over throw and scored on Valentino Pascucci's RBI double to the right field corner to make it a 5-2 game.
Maine pitched through the sixth inning, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with two walks, five strikeouts, a hit batsman and three wild pitches... His counterpart Familia also pitched 6.0 innings on the night but allowed five runs, all earned on 10 Yankees hits. The right hander did not walk anyone and finished his night with seven strikeouts, a hit batsman and two wild pitches.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning putting together a rally against reliever Elvin Ramirez with two out. Fukudome worked a two out walk and scored from first base on a gap double to left center field by Darnell McDonald to stretch the lead to 6-2.
The Bisons added a single run in the eighth inning off reliever Preston Claiborne picking up an unearned run off the right hander to make it a 6-3 score. Pascucci led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on Matt Tuiasosopo's single to left. A fielder's choice moved Pascucci to third with two down. The third run of the night for Buffalo scored on the 14th passed ball of the season charged to SWB catcher Francisco Cervelli.
Ryota Igarashi (SV, 10) followed up Claiborne's scoreless 2.0 innings with a shaky start to the ninth walking the first two batters he faced. With Mike Nickeas at second and Lewis at first, Josh Satin closed the gap to 6-4 with an RBI double to the right field corner putting the tying run at second base with no outs. The closer got tough and struck out the next three hitters he faced to close out the game with his 10th save of the season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens five straight games in Allentown against Lehigh Valley with a three game road series beginning on Saturday night at 6:35 PM. The Yankees will open the series with right hander Ramon Ortiz (12-5, 3.13 ERA) on the mound. The Iron Pigs are scheduled to start lefty Mario Hollands (0-1, 12.00) ERA.
