Rochester Red Wings Game Notes - Friday, April 27 at Buffalo

April 27, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2012 w COCA-COLA FIELD

GAME #21 - ROAD GAME #9 - 6:05 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (9-11) at BUFFALO BISONS (11-10)

RHP SAMUEL DEDUNO (0-1, 3.94) vs. RHP JEURYS FAMILIA (2-1, 5.30)

NICE TO MEAT YOU: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin an 8-game roadtrip with the first of 4 at the Buffalo Bisons (Mets). The Wings yesterday wrapped up a rain-shortened 5-game homestand, winning 2 of 2 vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies) before getting swept in a 3-game series vs. Syracuse (Nationals), including a doubleheader yesterday. Following 4 games in Buffalo, Rochester will return to Frontier Field to play 4 with the host Empire State Yankees Tuesday-Friday.

a Rochester Wednesday began a stretch of playing a season-high 28 days in a row through May 22 (barring any rainouts).

a The Red Wings' first 38 games are within the IL North Division, a stretch that runs through May 14.

I SEE A TREND HERE: The Red Wings have started 9-11 for the 2nd year in a row and for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons. The only season with a different record in that time was 2010, when Rochester went 7-13 in its first 20 games.

a The Wings have spent all but 3 days at or above the .500 mark. They were 5-6 on April 15 after a 3-1 loss at Lehigh Valley, 7-8 on Thursday after a 5-3 setback at the Empire State Yankees, and 9-11 after suffering a doubleheader sweep yesterday vs. Syracuse.

a With 9 wins, the Red Wings have already matched their win total from April of last year with 4 games remaining. The Wings' next win in April would give them their most in the season-opening month since 2008, when they were 13-14.

a The Wings have lost 3 in a row and 5 of their last 7. A loss tonight would match their season-worst 4-game losing streak from April 12-15.

A LOOK BACK AT THE SYRACUSE SERIES: The Red Wings were swept in a series of 3 games or more for the first time since August 22-25, 2011, when they were swept in a 4-game set at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees). Rochester was swept by Syracuse in a series of at least 3 games for the first time since May 19-21, 2010, when the Chiefs swept a 4-game set at Frontier Field.

a With 5-4 and 3-2 losses in yesterday's doubleheader, it marked the first time that both games of a Red Wings doubleheader were decided by one run since September 6, 2009 vs. Scranton. The Wings lost 2-1 and 3-2 that day.

a Rochester went 18 games into the season without playing extra innings until the first game of yesterday's twinbill (8 innings). It was the longest such streak to start a season since 2003, when the Red Wings played 11 innings in their 31st game May 7 at Durham (Rays). The Wings won 4-3 that day.

a The Wings surrendered 18 runs in the series, their most in a series (of any length) this year.

a The Wings hadn't been swept in a doubleheader at home since June 20, 2011 vs. Charlotte (White Sox), losing 7-2 and 5-1.

HOME BODIES: The Red Wings played 16 of their first 20 games at Frontier Field, including 4 as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees. Rochester tonight begins a stretch of playing 16 of 18 games as the road team through May 14, but 4 of the 16 will be at Frontier Field against the Empire State Yankees.

a The Wings are 5-7 in home games and 7-9 at Frontier Field overall.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT COKE?: The Red Wings enter tonight having lost 6 games in a row at Coca-Cola Field. Rochester last won in Buffalo in the 2nd game of an April 19, 2011 doubleheader, a 2-0 triumph in 7 innings. The 6-game skid is tied for the club's longest losing streak against an opponent on the road.

a Oddly enough, the other 6-game losing streak against one opponent on the road is at Lehigh Valley's Coca-Cola Park. Thus, Rochester is on a 12-game losing streak at Coke-inspired ballparks. The Wings were last victorious at Lehigh Valley on May 29, 2011, when they posted a 6-2 win.

LIVING ON THE EDGE: Eighteen of the Red Wings' first 20 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. The only 2 games that were decided by more than 3 runs are a 10-1 loss April 12 vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox) and a 10-5 setback Wednesday vs. Syracuse. A save has been recorded in all but one of the Red Wings' 20 games: Wednesday vs. Syracuse.

a Three of Rochester's last 4 contests have been one-run affairs.

A LITTLE SLIDE: The Red Wings pitching staff ranks 6th in the International League with a 3.38 ERA. The Rochester staff had ranked 4th in the circuit with a 3.02 ERA prior to getting swept in a 3-game series vs. Syracuse.

a Red Wings pitchers have given up 15 home runs, including 4 during the 3-game set vs. Syracuse. Eight of the 15 home runs allowed have been with runners on base, including 3 two-run homers, 3 three-run homers, and 2 grand slams. Both grand slams came in the same game Wednesday night.

PRESTIGIOUS HARDWARE: The Red Wings are in the midst of the heated battle for the Thruway Series Cup, a 3-team race for the best record in upstate New York among Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. Here are the standings of the Hillside Family of Agencies Thruway Series (Cup standings include only games against one another) with first place on the line tonight:

Rank Team Record Win %

1. Buffalo .571

2. Rochester .500

Syracuse .500
