Gwinnett Stripers News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Jose Constanza's one-out RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Gwinnett Braves to a 3-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday night at Fifth-Third Field in Toledo, OH.
The G-Braves rolled out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the third. J.C. Boscan ripped a one-out double to left and scored on a double to center by Luis Durango. Constanza would then plate Durango with his first hit of the game, a single to left-center.
G-Braves' left-handed starting pitcher Yohan Flande got into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. He walked Jerad Head and Omir Santos to lead off the inning. A single by Audy Ciriaco scored Head to cut the G-Braves' lead to 2-1. Quintin Berry's bunt single then loaded the bases with no one out. After Flande got the first out, right-hander Adam Russell came in from the bullpen. Russell gave up a sac fly to Rawley Bishop that tied the game 2-2, but was able to get out of the inning without further damage.
That set the stage for Constanza's heroics in the seventh. Greg Paiml poked a one-out single to right off of right-handed reliever Rob Waite. An error on Waite on a ground ball to the mound by Durango put two on, and Paiml would then score from second on the Constanza hit for the eventual winning run.
Flande, who gave up his first runs of the season, did not figure into the decision. He worked 4.1 innings with four hits, two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts. Russell (W, 3-0), who entered in the fifth, picked up the win by working 1.2 scoreless innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Right-hander Anthony Varvaro (H, 2) also pitched 1.2 scoreless frames, giving up three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Left-hander Dusty Hughes (S, 3) worked the final 1.1 innings to get the save.
Waite (L, 1-1) worked two innings in relief of Mud Hens' starter Ramon Garcia. Waite gave up three hits and one earned run while striking out one. Garcia had worked the first five innings with four hits, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Right-hander Jose Ortega worked a scoreless eighth and lefty Austin Wood a scoreless ninth for Toledo.
At the plate, Constanza was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Durango, Boscan, Paiml, Joey Terdoslavich and Josh Wilson each collected one hit.
The IL South-leading Gwinnett Braves (15-7) and the Toledo Mud Hens (14-7) play game two of the four game series in Toledo on Saturday night, with a 6:00 PM first pitch. Right-hander Todd Redmond (1-2, 2.61) gets the start for Gwinnett. Toledo pitches left-hander Shawn Teufel (1-0, 3.18). Listen to the broadcast on WDUN AM 550 and FM 102.9 in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
