Rochester Americans News Release

In front of the photo collage of past Rochester Americans and Knighthawks greats in the team's front office, the team added another photo worthy of mounting on the wall. The photograph features Amerks and Knighthawks President Lewis Staats handing Gilda's Club of Rochester Executive Director Beverly Brooks a check for $2,128. "It is so generous for the Amerks and Knighthawks to give us the donation," said Brooks, who is also a cancer survivor. "Everything at Gilda's Club is free of charge. It gives support to those living with cancer and is possible through such donations."

Gilda's club is one of five local cancer-related charities that will receive proceeds from the American Hockey League and National Lacrosse League team's Breast Cancer Nights. The Knighthawks/Amerks Charitable Foundation, Inc., will also distribute the money to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Pluta Cancer Center and the Wilmot Cancer Center.

"The Rochester Knighthawks and Americans are pleased to support Gilda's Club and all these worthwhile organizations in the Rochester area who are all doing their best in the fight against cancer," said Staats. "We feel that we have a responsibility to support people and organizations in Rochester who make it their business to help others and will continue to do so now and in the future."

The Rochester Americans and Knighthawks raised $15,644.55 through their annual Breast Cancer Nights at The Blue Cross Arena. Both teams wore pink jerseys on themed nights to raise awareness and money to fight the disease.

The Knighthawks also participated in a league-wide initiative to fight breast cancer. The Knighthawks hosted their event on April 3rd and turned The Blue Cross Arena into a sea of pink with the wearing of pink helmets and jerseys, and the changing of their dasher boards from white to pink. The pink dashers were the first of their kind in NLL history.

The Amerks and Knighthawks first donation of the summer will assist the Gilda's Club of Rochester, which was founded in 2007. This past year the local chapter received 14,500 visits and boasted 2,500 members. The non-profit organization provides "a meeting place for men, women and children living with cancer, along with their family and friends. They join with others to build social and emotional support as a supplement to medical care." It also offers support and networking groups, lectures, workshops and social events in a non-residential, homelike setting. Gilda's Club is funded through the generosity of private individuals, corporations, foundations, and grants.
