Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Even though the National Hockey League lockout has limited the number of player promotions this season, the Rockford IceHogs of the United Hockey League had two players called-up this week to American Hockey League clubs. Goaltender Michel Robinson was loaned to the Milwaukee Admirals on Thursday and defenseman Tim Wedderburn was called to the Chicago Wolves Friday. The Hogs have had three different teams, including the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, use Rockford players this season.
"To consistently win, you have to have good young players or you have to spend a lot of money," said IceHogs Head Coach Steve Martinson. "Two ways to get good young players is to have affiliated teams sign them for you or you can agree to loan players the AHL.
"Having affiliates sign players to two-way contracts can back fire if the players don't get an opportunity to play in the AHL. They begin to feel cheated and misled which can erode team chemistry."
Robinson suited up for the Admirals on Thursday night in Milwaukee and served as the team's back-up goaltender. The Admirals knocked off the Mighty Ducks 9-3 at the Bradley Center. The second year goalie attended Milwaukee's training camp prior to coming to Rockford this fall. The game marked Robinson's first career call-up to the AHL.
Wedderburn earned his second call-up of the young 2004-05 season, this time to Chicago. The d-man will face-off against the team in which he began the season with, Cincinnati. Wedderburn attended the Mighty Ducks camp and missed the first two weeks of the Hogs season while in Cincinnati.
The IceHogs blue-liner spent his first two professional seasons skating in the "A". Last year Wedderburn played for the Utah Grizzlies and during his rookie campaign, he played with the Hershey Bears. Robinson will be back with Rockford for tonight's game, while Wedderburn will be with the Wolves for at least two games this weekend.
Upcoming Home Games: The IceHogs return to the MetroCentre this weekend for two crucial games. The IceHogs welcome the Muskegon Fury to the MetroCentre on Friday in a battle of the top two teams in the UHL. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans to the game will receive Smash Hit Hockey Poster #2 from Medicine Man, Pepsi, Johnson Press, and Rockford Register Star.
On Saturday the Quad City Mallards return to the MetroCentre for a Western Division showdown. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and the first 1,000 kids 12-and under will receive a full-length hockey stick courtesy of Lonnies Carpet Max, 23WIFR and WXRX, 104.9 FM. For tickets call (815) 968-5222.
