Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT - August 15th - The Bridgeport Bluefish are excited to announce that on the 18th of August, The Ballpark at Harbor Yard will be celebrating one of Amtrak's Diversity Days.
August 18th, 2006 marks the 72nd anniversary of the birth of Roberto Clemente. In light of this, the Bluefish will be celebrating Roberto Clemente Night, sponsored by Compare Foods. The Bluefish will be honoring Clemente by retiring his number (21); the first retired number in Atlantic League history.
Clemente was a 12 time all-star, won four National League batting titles, and recorded over 3,000 hits before dying in a tragic plane crash on New Years Eve, 1972. Clemente was traveling to Nicaragua to deliver supplies to earthquake victims when his plane abruptly crashed. In 1973 he became the first Hispanic elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Clemente once said, "Anytime you have an opportunity to make things better and you don't, then you are wasting your time on this Earth." The Bluefish share a strong bond with Clemente, identifying with his tireless efforts to help those in the communities he loved. The Bluefish are significantly involved throughout Bridgeport and much of Fairfield County, providing services to the communities that they care deeply about.
The first 1200 fans through the gates of the ballpark on the 18th will receive free rain ponchos, courtesy of the Connecticut Lottery. In addition, all fans in attendance are invited to stay for the post game fireworks display.
The Bluefish continue to hold WEBE Wednesdays ($1 hot dogs and Pepsi), and McTuesdays (Free voucher for 1 extra value meal at McDonald's) every week.
The first-place Bluefish begin a stint of nine straight home games on August 25th versus the Road Warriors. After the Road Warriors leave town the Bluefish will take on the Somerset Patriots and Atlantic City Surf for three games a piece.
The Bridgeport Bluefish Professional Baseball Club, a charter team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, plays its home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, located off Exit 27 of I-95 on the corner of Broad Street and South Frontage Road in Bridgeport. The Bluefish lead the league in franchise attendance, having drawn one million fans faster than any other team in Connecticut minor league history. 2006 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 203-345-4800.
