Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - August 17, 2006 - Newark Bears infielder Victor Rodriguez tied the Atlantic League's 27-game hitting streak record set in 2005 by the Somerset Patriots Billy Hall. After hitting safely in the last 11 games of his MVP 2004 season with the Patriots, Rodriguez left the Atlantic League to play in the Japanese Professional Leagues, before returning on July 28 when he signed a 2006 contract with the Newark Bears. After signing, Rodriguez hit safely in his first 16 games of the season, tying the record of 27.
In a statement by Atlantic League Commissioner Joe Klein, he agreed the league should recognize the streak as a record however "There must be special mention that it took place over 2 seasons, and should be mentioned separately and recorded as such."
Since joining the Bears on July 28, Rodriguez is hitting .485 with 11 doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI, and 13 runs scored. The record tying hit came in the top of the fourth inning on August 15, with an RBI double giving the Bears an early 8-0 lead. The Bears would go on to win the game 9-3, with Rodriguez finishing 1-for-1 with three walks, and was hit by a pitch.
