Newark Bears News Release

August 17, 2006 - The Newark Bears dropped game three of the rubber match against the Patriots in Bridgewater tonight by a final count of 3-2. The Bears were down 2-1 entering the 8th inning when Patriots reliever Kane Davis walked the first three batters of the inning. Third baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, but Davis rebounded to induce a fly out to left by Will Pennyfeather and then struck out Al Benjamin to end the threat.

Both starters went seven innings. Bears starter Joe Gannon, pitching on the two-year anniversary of his no-hitter against the Patriots in Bridgewater, allowed two runs on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman. He struck out five and was not involved in the decision. Neither was Patriots lefty Sam McConnell. McConnell scattered seven hits, giving up a two-out RBI single by Pennyfeather in the sixth for the Bears only run off him. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

In what is expected to be his final game of the season with the Patriots, Ryan Radmanovich hit a walk-off homer in the ninth off of Bears reliever Jeremy Hill. Hill (5-4) worked a scoreless eighth before allowing just his third home run this season to his first batter in the ninth. Radmanovich, shortstop Kevin Nicholson and reliever Mike Johnson are all leaving to go play with Team Canada for the better part of three weeks and are not expected back before season's end.

Patriots reliever David Elder (1-1) pitched a perfect ninth for his first win of the season.

Following a night where his 16-game hitting streak was broken, Victor Rodriguez doubled in three at bats and hit the sac fly in the eighth.

The Bears now head to Lancaster for a weekend series with the Barnstormers. Mike Cosgrove (0-1, 11.05 ERA) will make his 3rd start for the Bears. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
