Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored six unearned runs, thanks in-part to three errors and one passed ball, in an 11-4 win over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Sunday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (2-2) struck right away against Mike Reeves. Javis Davis led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second base. One out later, Salvador Paniagua walked and Joel Roa hit an RBI-single. One batter later Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0.
Paniagua led off the third with a walk. Two outs later, Gonzalez and Toth hit back-to-back singles to make it 3-0.
The Roadrunners (3-1) got on the board for the first time against Stephen Whalen (0-1) with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth. Carlos Hereaud led off with a walk and Ambiorix Concepcion singled on an 0-2 pitch. Vincent Blue hit a grounder to second that Jeff Toth threw into left field, allowing Hereaud to score and Concepcion to move to third. One out later, Robert Matlock hit an RBI-groundout to make it 3-2.
The Roadrunners took a 4-3 lead in the fifth with two more unearned runs. With one out, Wilmer Pino reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Hereaud followed with a triple, and after a Concepcion walked, Blue hit an RBI-single.
Matlock led off the top of the sixth with a single and Alexis Hernandez homered to knock out Whalen. Andres Rosales came in and struck out Adam Matos, but he reached on a passed ball. Two outs later, Hereaud hit a home run to make it 8-3.
That made a winner of Aaron Guerra (1-0), who pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out three while throwing 30-of-34 pitches for strikes.
The WhiteWings loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth against Robbie Nelson, but drove in only one run on a Paniagua double play.
The Roadrunners added three runs in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.
The series shifts to Edinburg Baseball Stadium as the WhiteWings and Roadrunners face off in game three of this four-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Greg Conrad (0-0) is expected to face right-hander Wardell Starling (0-0).
