San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas--- In a game that had just about everything you could ask for except for a Colts win, San Angelo fell a little short. The Colts rallied twice, a former Colts Captain returned, homerun power from an unlikely source, a solid relief performance from a former Angelo State player and even a triple play.

The Colts Patrick Lawler got off to a tough start walking the first two batters in each of the first three innings. In the first Lawler hit a batter and walked three, including walking in one of the runs, allowing an RBI double by Carlos Figuero and an RBI single by TJ Warren to make it 4-0 Amarillo after one.

The Colts countered with two right away in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half to make it 4-2, as former Colts Captain Jason Crosland was in the middle of the rally with a walk in his first at bat in his return to the Colts lineup. The Colts added one in the third after two quick ground ball outs, and a third right at shortstop Joaquin Rodriguez that looked like an easy 1-2-3 inning. However Rodriguez threw the ball away allowing Jason Landreth to reach and then Adam Hale followed with an RBI double that made it 4-3.

Momentum continued to change quickly after beginning the third the same way he began the first two innings, Lawler walked the first two and was relieved by Scott Crook. Crook got the first batter he faced TJ Warren to hit a rocket that Colts third baseman, who has put on a fielding clinic in the first three games, climbed the ladder reaching back and pulling down the line drive. He went to second for out number two, getting Matt Ceriani who was to far off the base to go back and the relay back to first had Stephen Douglas in the same position for a triple play.

The Colts were not done. They took the first lead of the game in the fourth after Trey Carter led off with a walk and then Butch Ballez hit his first homerun of the year and the Colts were up 5-4. The lead was short lived as Amarillo scored four times in the bottom of that inning on a bases clearing triple that drove in three by Joaquin Rodriguez, and a sac fly by Carlos Figuero made it 8-5 Dillas.

After adding a run in the fifth to make it 9-6 the Colts tried to mount another rally by adding two in the top of the eighth. One on Michael Pettibone's first career hit as a pro which broke an 0 for 13 slide, a triple that scored the first run. Then an RBI ground out by Ronnie Gaines cut the lead to 9-8. Amarillo scored two in the bottom of the inning on a Matt Ceriani single and that would wind up being the final score however, 11-8.

Game two of this four game set will feature a pitching matchup of Colts right-hander Chase Vacek against fellow righty Ralph Roberts. All the action begins an hour earlier on Sunday with a 6:05 first pitch and the Kemps pre-game show beginning at 5:50. Catch all the action on 1260 KKSA.
