Chico Outlaws News Release
ST. GEORGE, UT - The Chico Outlaws completed a disappointing 2-6 road trip Sunday by dropping a pair to St. George - the Roadrunners winning the first game 6-4, then coming from behind in the nightcap to best the Outlaws 10-8 at Bruce Hurst Field on the campus of Dixie State College.
The Outlaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning of game one, as Steve Boggs led off the contest with a double and scored on Daniel Nava's two-out single to right. St. George answered with three in the bottom of the 2nd off Chico starter John Jefferson; Dustin Hicks putting the Roadrunners in front with a two-run inside the park home run. Gary Harris cracked a solo homer to left in the 3rd inning...then in the 5th St. George added two more runs off Jefferson to build a 6-1 lead. Despite issuing seven walks, Roadrunners starter Danny Hall kept the Outlaws off the scoreboard until the 7th, when Chico rallied for three runs to pull to within two - Scott Dragicevich was walked with the bases loaded...Nava delivered another RBI single...and Jesse Kovacs scored on a Jason Van Meetren groundout. The Outlaws had the tying run in scoring position with one out, but St. George reliever Donovan Graves came in to squelch the rally, getting pinch hitters Todd Gossage to line out and David Pierson to ground out to end the game and give the Roadrunners the 6-4 victory. Hall (1-2) earned the victory, with Graves picking up his first save of the season...Jefferson (4-2) was saddled with the loss.
Game two saw the Outlaws squander three different leads in losing their third straight. Chico sent 11 men to the plate in the 2nd inning, chasing St. George starter Robert Salini and going up 6-0 - RBI singles by Nava, Jason Alcott and Jason Matteucci, bases loaded walks issued to Van Meetren and Eric Pringle and a wild pitch allowing Matteucci to score highlighted the big inning. The Roadrunners came back with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd and four more in the 3rd (sparked by back-to-back home runs by Harris and Juan Melo). Van Meetren put the Outlaws back out in front 7-6 with his third homer of the year, a solo shot in the 5th...but in the bottom of the inning Brett Flowers knocked in Geoff Wagner with a single to right to knot up the score 7-7. In the 6th inning Nava came through with another two-out RBI hit, singling to right to drive home Pringle and put Chico up 8-7 (Nava would finish the day with five hits and four RBI; he collected 12 hits and had 10 RBI for the series). But in the bottom of the 6th St. George plated three runs off Outlaws reliever Jesse Oster - the big blow: a two-run homer by Ryan Stevenson to put the Roadrunners ahead for good. Reliever Tony Pluta came in to get the final three outs in the 7th, giving St. George the doubleheader sweep and series victory...it marked the first time in Roadrunners history the team had won three straight games. Graves (2-3), the third of four St. George pitchers, got the win with Pluta picking up his fourth save of the season...Oster (3-2) took the loss for Chico.
The two losses dropped the Outlaws to 6-13 in the second half and 31-26 overall...it was announced immediately after the game that catcher Jason Alcott was traded to St. George for a player to be named later; the Outlaws also signed last year's Golden Baseball League All-Star Craig Kuzmic to a contract; he will join the team Tuesday as Chico opens a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Long Beach Armada. Right-hander Tyler Pearson (4-5) will get the start for the Outlaws in the series opener...game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
