GBL All-Star Craig Kuzmic Returns to Outlaws

CHICO, CALIF - The Chico Outlaws Monday announced that one of the team's top players from 2006 will be returning to help this year's addition of the Outlaws in their pursuit of a Golden Baseball League championship - Craig Kuzmic has agreed to a contract for the remainder of the 2007 season and will be in uniform tomorrow night when the Outlaws host the Long Beach Armada at Nettleton Stadium.
To make room for Kuzmic on the roster, the Outlaws traded catcher Jason Alcott to the GBL's St. George Roadrunners for a player to be named later.
The 30-year-old Kuzmic joins the Outlaws after playing part of the summer in Italy. Last season he was arguably one of the top three players in the GBL, batting .319 for Chico with 12 home runs and 53 RBI in 72 games. Despite missing the final week of the 2006 regular season, Craig led the GBL in runs scored (60) and finished second in the league in doubles (23), extra-base hits (37), slugging percentage (.552) and on-base percentage (.434). His .319 average was sixth best in the league and he also finished in the top five in home runs, leading to his being named to the GBL's post-season All-Star team. His efforts were rewarded when the Toronto Blue Jays purchased Kuzmic's contract from the GBL in late August; Craig wrapped up the 2006 season playing for the Blue Jays double-A affiliate, the New Hampshire Fisher Kings.
A 10-year veteran, Kuzmic played in the Mariners, Giants, Nationals and Blue Jays organizations after Seattle selected him in the eighth round of the 1998 amateur draft out of Texas A&M. Craig - who played for Outlaws manager Mark Parent when the two were at single-A Lancaster in 2000 - has spent parts of four seasons at the triple-A level, most recently in 2005 with the New Orleans Zephyrs.
