Roadrunners Steal Win in the Ninth

August 15, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Reno Silver Sox News Release

The Silver Sox were once again undone in the ninth inning as the Roadrunners scored two runs in the ninth to beat the Silver Sox 9 - 8.

Neither team's starting pitcher started off the game on the right foot, however it was Silver Sox starter James Johnson that was able to overcome it.

Johnson pitched six innings for the Silver Sox and even though he allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on six hits, Johnson left the game with a one run lead.

The Silver Sox offense came alive in the first three innings for Johnson helping him keep the Silver Sox in the game, and eventually take the lead. The Silver Sox scored seven runs in the first four innings, unfortunately so did the Roadrunners. The Silver Sox were led on offense by 1B Adam Amar who went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Amar's biggest hit of the night came in the third inning when he hit a monster double that almost hit the very top of the centerfield wall. That hit allowed CF Victor Hall and SS Maurice Cole to score.

The Silver Sox would eventually take the lead in the sixth inning when LF Kane Simmons hit a single up the middle scoring Cole and giving the Silver Sox a 7 - 6 lead.

Then the game got interesting. New P Joe Walentin, who relieved Johnson in the eighth, was sent back out in the ninth to get the save and the win for the Silver Sox. Walentin got two quick groundouts and everything looked good for the Silver Sox. With two outs, Roadrunner LF Ryan Stevenson hit a triple and then was able to score when 2B Mike Done threw the ball over 3B Chuck Sindlinger's head. The ball went into the Roadrunner dugout which meant that Stevenson is automatically awarded another base, in this case, that base was home. The Roadrunners had now tied the ball game at 7. Walentin seemed to be a little bit shaken up after that play. Walentin then allowed a single, followed by a walk, before he let former Silver Sox Cody Nowlin hit an RBI single, giving the Roadrunners the lead.

The Silver Sox had one more chance to get the win and Amar again came to the rescue. Amar hit a lead off double to get things going for the Silver Sox. Done then failed to bunt properly and popped up to the catcher, failing to move Amar over to third. RF Ryan Kowalski then struck out on a 3-2 count. However, the Silver Sox then got walks from Sindlinger and C Josh McLeod to load the bases with Victor Hall coming to the plate.

Hall worked the count and eventually the game was set up like every boy imagines; bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, 3-2 count, your team down by one run, but even a script writer couldn't have written this ending. On the next pitch, Hall was hit and what should have been an awarded base turned out to be the end of the game because Hall check swung too far for strike three. Your final score, Roadrunners 9 Silver Sox 8.

The Silver Sox return home to Peccole Park on Saturday, August 18, for the beginning of a nine game, eight day homestand. Also, Saturday's game is Baseball Card Night at Peccole Park. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a free pack of first edition Silver Sox Baseball Cards. To purchase your tickets for this, or any other Silver Sox game, visit the Silver Sox ticket booth before the game.
