Yuma Scorpions News Release

YUMA, Ariz. - The hitting of Yosvany Almario and Mike Goss helped the Yuma Scorpions hold off the Chico Outlaws in an 11-8 victory Tuesday night at Desert Sun Stadium in front of 1,031 fans.

Almario was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including a double which scored pinch runner and Aaron Wilson, as well as him after a throwing error from Chico?s Jason Matteucci.

That score gave Yuma (38-25, 17-9) a 9-9 lead after five innings, but the first-half champion Outlaws did not go down without a fight.

They scored seven runs in the sixth inning highlighted by two-run hits from Todd Gossage and Steve Boggs and added another run in the seventh to trim the Yuma lead to 9-8.

However, that?s as close as Chico (35-29, 10-16) came. The Scorpions responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Almario?s two-run double, which scored A.J. Valentine and Hector Bernal.

Valentine helped Yuma gain an early lead with his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the first inning.

Goss went 2 for 5 with two runs scored and Henry Calderon drove in three runs.

Getting the win for the Scorpions was right-hander Evan White (7-2), who went 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Just three of the runs were earned.

Greg Bicknell got the loss for the Outlaws, going five innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits.

The Scorpions stayed even with the Long Beach Armada (43-21, 20-6) in the second-half standings as they defeated the Orange County Flyers 5-3 Tuesday night.

Yuma and Chico meet for the second game of its four-game series at 7 p.m. tonight at Desert Sun Stadium.
