Roadrunners Hold off Colts for Victory

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored five early runs and held off a late rally to defeat the San Angelo Colts 10-8 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Edinburg has now won six of their last eight games.

The Roadrunners (30-30) took the early lead in the bottom of the first after Travis Clark hit an RBI single to left field that scored Tim Maitland from second. Two outs later, Dan Coury hit his team-leading sixth home run pushing the lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, Clark added to Edinburg's lead with a sacrifice fly that drove in Jordan Etier from third. Trevor Whyte then followed with an RBI single that scored Maitland from second. Coury then hit an RBI double to left field scoring Whyte from first and making it 5-0.

The Colts (27-30) got on the board in the top of the fourth against Cullen Babin. Tyler Wagner hit a two-run single that scored Derrick Pyles and Steve Rinuado but then a throw to second allowed Bubby Williams to score cutting into the Roadrunners lead 5-3.

Edinburg responded with a pair in the bottom of the fourth as Maitland hit a two-run double extending their lead 7-3.

Joseph Hicks and Pyles each drove in a run in the top of the fifth for the Colts making it 7-5 Edinburg.

A fielding error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Roadrunners to score two more runs and then they added another run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI triple by Maitland extending their lead to 10-5.

Cullen Babin (2-0) pitched six and two-third innings and allowed five runs, two earned, while striking out four for his second win of the season.

San Angelo made it interesting with three runs in the top of the ninth but Alex Schmarzo struck out Tyler Wagner to end the game 10-8 for his second save.

The Roadrunners and Colts will play game two of their four-game series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Saturday's promotion will feature a Rally Towel giveaway sponsored by AEP Texas where the first 500 fans through the gates will receive one.
