
Roadrunners Head to Championship Series

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners completed the sweep of the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in the best-of-three series with an 11-5 victory Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
With the win, Edinburg will play for the United League Championship against the Fort Worth Cats, who swept the San Angelo Colts, starting Friday night in Fort Worth.
The Roadrunners (2-0) jumped out to the quick lead in the bottom of the first. Vincent Blue started the inning with a double and then he came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Hereaud for the 1-0 edge.
After the WhiteWings (0-2) tied the game in the top of the second, Edinburg scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Osiel Flores and Wilmer Pino each had two RBI in the inning. Pino drove his two runs in on a two-run home run making it 6-1 Edinburg.
The Roadrunners added single runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings that extended their lead 9-1.
Leivi Ventura and Romulo Ruiz each hit a double in the top of the sixth. Ventura's double drove in Rudy Yan and Ruiz' double drove in two cutting into the Roadrunners lead 9-4.
Felix Molina hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored Joe Weik and Derek Perren that pushed the lead to 11-4.
Jose Oyervidez (1-0) picked up the win after allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings with three strike outs.
RGV added a run in the top of the seventh that made it 11-5 but Tetsuaya Iwasaki, Billy Petrick and Robert Roth closed out the rest of the ball game giving Edinburg the victory.
WhiteWings' starter Luis Noel (0-1) lasted an inning and two-thirds but allowed six runs on five hits as he took the loss.
The United League Championship series will start Friday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Roadrunners will host game three of the best-of-five championship series on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at the Edinburg front office or by visiting www.etix.com. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
