Roadrunners Defeat 'Wings in Opener

HARLINGEN, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners used an 11-run top of the third inning to defeat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 13-4 Sunday night at Harlingen Field.

Travis Clark finished the night 3-for-6 with five RBI including a grand slam.

The Roadrunners (27-29) got the scoring started in the top of the third as they sent 16 batters to the plate. Travis Clark paced an offense that scored 11 runs on nine hits with a grand slam helping Edinburg to an 11-0 advantage.

The WhiteWings (28-27) answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Roberto Ramirez hit an RBI single that scored Paul Montalbano from first. Goose Kallunki later hit an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Ramirez from third. A wild pitch then allowed Albert Carpen to score making it 11-3 Edinburg.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ramirez got the 'Wings closer with an RBI single that scored Eduardo Sosa but that would be all the runs they would score against Edinburg starter Curtis Camilli.

Camilli (5-4) went six innings and allowed just four runs on six hits while striking out three.

The Roadrunners added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Tim Maitland hit an RBI single that allowed Agustin Septimo to score. Clark recorded hits fifth RBI of the night after an RBI single that scored Carlton Salters making it 13-4.

Bryan Kloppe pitched the final three innings while scattering just two hits giving Edinburg the 13-4 victory as he earned his first save of the season.

Bobby O'Neil (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs in two and a third innings of work.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play game two of their four-game series Monday night at Harlingen Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Roadrunners return home on Thursday, July 25 th when they host the San Angelo Colts for a four game series and it will be Thirsty Thursday were all beer will be sold at a discounted price. Gates open at 6:05 pm and first pitch at 7:05 pm.
