Ottawa RedBlacks News Release

OTTAWA - The Ottawa REDBLACKS today announced a campaign to identify and honour everyday heroes ... the people who put their own health at risk to enable the rest of us stay safe. The team is asking the public to nominate an everyday hero, tell us their story and let us share some of them with #RNation. Every week we'll profile an everyday hero and present them with a "virtual wood cookie," symbolizing excellence and our appreciation.

Everyday heroes would of course include intensive care doctors and nurses, first responders and workers in long-term care facilities, but many others that are critically important to our wellbeing fall under the radar. They might be cashiers in grocery stores, delivery drivers or cooks preparing free meals for front-line workers. Perhaps they have raised funds for charities or collected food for the Ottawa Food Bank or entertained us with online musical performances. Whatever they've done, these are people that help us cope with the with stress and sadness of the times. We want to let them know that they are appreciated.

REDBLACKS' fans are very familiar with the wood cookie and what it stands for. Whenever the team scores a touchdown, a chainsaw rips though a touchdown log and these log slices are called wood cookies. They are then presented to exceptional members of our community at games as fans hear their stories and roar their appreciation. That's not possible right now, but with so many people doing so many great things, we thought the time was right to recognize some with a virtual wood cookie.

Members of the public who wish to nominate an everyday hero can do so by visiting the REDBLACKS website. All nominees will be notified that someone took the time to let us know that they are appreciated, and one nominee per week will be recognized with a virtual wood cookie, starting on May 22.
