Rivermen to Play Nailers in Pittsburgh

The Wheeling Nailers announced on Thursday that their Sunday, October 20 game originally scheduled for the Wheeling Civic Center will be relocated to the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. The Mellon Arena is the home of the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and holds 16,958 for hockey. The game will start at 3:00 PM and is the 2nd a two-game road trip for the Rivermen, both games against the Nailers. Peoria will play in Wheeling on Saturday, October 19 at the Wheeling Civic Center. Wheeling, West Virginia is only 62 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

This will be the second time in Peoria hockey history that the Rivermen have played in the home of an NHL team. Peoria opened what was then called the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri during the NHL strike during the 94-95 season. The IHL Rivermen whipped the Cincinnati Cyclones in a game played in front of over 8,500 fans.

The Rivermen will be hosting a fan trip to this weekend series, leaving Saturday morning and returning after the Sunday afternoon game. For details on the fan trip contact Mike Saurs at 309-676-1040, extension 112. The fan trip will leave from the Peoria Civic Center for a flight out of Chicago non-stop to Pittsburgh. The group will stay in Pittsburgh and bus to the game in Wheeling on Saturday night. The return flight departs from Pittsburgh on Sunday night, arriving back into Chicago around 9:00 PM where the group will be met by Peoria Charter Coach for the ride back to Peoria.
