Peoria Rivermen News Release
On Saturday evening at Carver Arena, the Peoria Rivermen defeated the Manitoba Moose in a closely contested, 2-1 struggle. Charles Linglet and Mike Glumac provided the offense, while Curtis Sanford stymied Manitoba with 25 saves on 26 shots.
The first period featured end-to-end action, and each team had several scoring opportunities, but the score remained 0-0 for much of the frame. Finally, at the 17:03 mark, the Rivermen took a 1-0 lead.
Peoria left winger Charles Linglet potted the goal. Defenseman Mike Mottau started the play by passing to winger Peter Sejna along the left wing boards above the face-off circle. Gliding along on his left skate, Sejna accepted the pass and calmly threaded the puck to Linglet all in one motion. The puck came to Linglet at the right post, and he banged it in behind Moose goaltender Wade Flaherty after going down on his left knee.
At the end of one period of play, the Rivermen held a 1-0 lead, and each team's shot total stood at 10.
Play during the second period remained crisp, and both teams had chances to score, both at even-strength and on the power play. But neither squad was able to light the lamp.
A Moose player hit the goalpost behind Peoria netminder Curtis Sanford on two occasions in the second period. With about 2:30 to go in the frame, Manitoba center Craig Darby clanged one off of the left post to Sanford's blocker side. The Moose finished the period with seven shots, while the Rivermen totaled eight.
Each team tallied once in the third period. Defenseman Tomas Mojzis tied the game for the Moose on a power play just three minutes in. After taking the puck just inside the blueline, Mojzis walked in from the right point and wristed a shot past Sanford.
Shortly thereafter, winger Mike Glumac put the Rivermen back on top. After driving to the net, Riverman Colin Hemingway got off a shot on goal as a Moose defender pushed him down. Manitoba goaltender Wade Flaherty blocked the shot but left a rebound, and Mike Glumac swooped in and popped the puck over him at the 6:51 mark.
That tally by Glumac proved to be the game-winner, as Peoria held on down the stretch of the period and also killed off more than one penalty. In addition to winning the game by a score of 2-1, the Rivermen also out-shot the Moose 28-26.
