PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Rivermen and Knoxville Ice Bears played 60 minutes of 2-2 hockey before Garrett Vermeersch scored the game winner 1:16 into overtime to beat the Ice Bears 3-2 at Carver Arena Saturday night. The win, Peoria's fourth in a row, lifts the Rivermen to 5-2-0 before a three game series on their home ice against Louisiana next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Ice Bears scored first with 6:12 gone by in the first period and a five-on-three powerplay, a result of a five-minute major boarding penalty to Matt Summers and a charging call on Dan Bremner, the former also giving Summers a game misconduct. With the man advantage Todd Hosmer took a backdoor feed at the post and put it past Rivermen netminder Kyle Rank for the 1-0 lead. The Rivermen tied the game with 18:26 left in the first when Jake Trask took a pass across the goalmouth and put it past a sprawled Braely Torris into the Knoxville net to make it 1-1.
The Ice Bears re-took the lead shorthanded with 14:30 to go in the second period as a loose puck in front of the Rivermen net was fired past Rank by Zack LaRue for the 2-1 IceBears lead. The Rivermen knotted it up with 10:06 to play in the second stanza as Alec Hagaman took a feed behind the net from Brandon Greenside and sniped it home for the 2-2 tie.
The two teams played scoreless through the final 30 minutes of regulation before going to overtime. The Rivermen notched the game-winner in OT as Garrett Vermeersch buried one from the deep slot assisted by Mike Slowikowski and Trask for the 3-2 Peoria win.
Kyle Rank earned his third straight win in net for the Rivermen, stopping 28 of 30 shots for the victory. Rank did not allow a goal in the game's final 35:46 of play, including overtime.
