Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS – The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League continue to add to their roster for the upcoming season, as today the team announced that they have agreed to terms with veteran defenseman Derek Landmesser.

Landmesser, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was one of four RiverKings to score over 50 points last season. The 6'1", 200 lb defenseman finished the campaign with 55 points (7G, 48A) and 83 penalty minutes.

RiverKings head coach Mark Richards is excited to have a veteran player of Landmesser's caliber returning to the roster.

"Obviously we're thrilled to have Derek back," said Richards. "He's our leader on the blue line, and one of our co-captains. He's been a top defenseman in this league for the past few years, and we're anticipating him having a big season this year."

Landmesser's reputation in the CHL among his peers was verified this past year, as Derek was named the best defensive defenseman and the best bodychecker in the league according to the "Best of the Best" poll, which is voted on by CHL players, coaches and media staff.

Richards says that Landmesser's defensive skills are just one factor in his game.

"Derek is a guy that can contribute offensively, and we're trying to make his job easier by bringing in some more help on the blueline," Richards said. "He's our special teams guy. He plays a lot on the power play, and logs a log of minutes for us."

It will be Landmesser's third season with the RiverKings. In addition to last year, Landmesser was also a member of the 2000-01 RiverKings squad.

Landmesser joins a roster that includes a mix of key RiverKings from the past two seasons, as well as some new faces. Team captain Don Parsons, veteran center Alexandre Mathieu, physical forward Riley Cote, and young defenseman Jeremy Goetzinger have already agreed to terms with Memphis for the 2004-05 campaign, as have former New Mexico Scorpions defenseman Jeff Cameron, Canadian goaltender David Lemanowicz, and high-scoring forward Allan Carr.

The RiverKings will take to the ice once again in late October for the 2004-05 season, as the team looks to earn a playoff berth for the fourth time in the last five years.
