RiverKings and Sports 56 WHBQ partner for game broadcasts
June 1, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS â The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League are pleased to announce that the team has entered into an agreement that will see all 60 RiverKings games and the RiverKings coach's show broadcast on Sports 56 WHBQ.
Galen Clavio will return as play-by-play broadcaster for the RiverKings, who enter this season looking to return to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years. Clavio will also host a weekly coach's show, which will feature RiverKings head coach Mark Richards, numerous appearances by RiverKings players, and other members of the organization.
Clavio says that the opportunity to broadcast on a station with the strength and reputation of Sports 56 WHBQ is a great one for the team.
"I think it's a great move for our entire organization," said Clavio. "It takes our games and puts them in a very visible position, on a station where sports fans tune in to listen to sports."
In addition to airing on 560 AM, the game broadcasts will also be available on the internet through Sports 56's website, www.sports56whbq.com.
Gary Saunders, the RiverKings Vice President of Sales and Business Operations, says he sees nothing but positives in the team's new broadcasting deal.
"We are tremendously excited about this new broadcast partnership with WHBQ," said Saunders. "Carrying our games on a sports-formatted station is a huge step forward for this organization. We anticipate our listening audience will grow substantially due to this change --- that's good news for us and our corporate partners. This should also greatly enhance our continued branding efforts in the Mid-South region. I consider this announcement to be nothing short of a milestone in the development of the Memphis RiverKings franchise."
This year's broadcast schedule will be announced once the RiverKings receive their schedule from the league, which will occur prior to the end of July. Each game broadcast will air on 560 AM, and will include a pre-game and post-game show, as well as several specialty segments throughout each game that will both entertain and inform fans about the rules and nuances of the game of hockey and the history of the Memphis RiverKings.
The 2004-05 RiverKings roster will include a mix of key RiverKings from the past two seasons, as well as some new faces. Team captain Don Parsons, assistant captain Derek Landmesser, veteran center Alexandre Mathieu, physical forward Riley Cote, and young defenseman Jeremy Goetzinger have already agreed to terms with Memphis for the 2004-05 campaign, as have former New Mexico Scorpions defenseman Jeff Cameron, Canadian goaltender David Lemanowicz, and high-scoring forward Allan Carr.
The RiverKings will take to the ice once again in late October for the 2004-05 season, as the team looks to earn a playoff berth for the fourth time in the last five years. Information on the RiverKings, including the latest roster moves, press releases, and pictures, is available at www.riverkings.com.
Season tickets for the 2004-05 season are now available for purchase and renewal. For more information, contact the RiverKings at (662) 342-1755.
