RiverKings to play in memorial tournament for Special Olympics athlete

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss.—The Memphis RiverKings will be competing in the first annual Leslie Mobley Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting Area 16 Special Olympics on Monday, June 7 at Wedgewood Golf Course in Olive Branch.

Leslie Mobley, a teenaged member of the Area 16 Special Olympics golf team, died a year ago from a seizure.

"She was a beautiful young lady, and a big part of the team," tournament director John Woods said. "We decided to have this tournament in her honor, to raise money for Special Olympics athletes and all the activities they're involved in."

Hole #5 was dedicated in memory of Mobley with the planting of a beautiful tree this year. There will be a "Most Accurate Drive" competition at this hole, with donations of any size accepted.

Wedgewood golf pros John Wells, Richard Howell and Steve Cunningham have donated their time to help coach the golf team, and it shows. Area 16, which includes DeSoto, Tunica, Quitman & Coahoma Counties, currently has the largest golf team in Mississippi. Several of their players have been invited to the national tournament this year in Palm Springs, Calif.

Woods' son, 19-year-old John Kelley Woods, is one of the athletes headed to Palm Springs. John Kelley, who has Fragile X Syndrome, has participated in Special Olympics sports for many years.

"These guys have done a wonderful job with the kids," Woods said. "Some of them have become really good golfers. It's really been great for them."

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., followed by an awards banquet and fish fry provided by First Choice Catering. Cost to play is just $75 per person, with a 4-man scramble format. Tickets to the awards banquet for non-golfers can be purchased $10, with all proceeds going to Special Olympics.

The tournament features some great prizes, including free rounds of golf at Grand Casino's Cottonwoods Golf Course and Cherokee Valley, North Creek and Wedgewood Golf Courses; gift certificates from James Davis clothing stores and Outback Steakhouse restaurant; and some great RiverKings ticket packages.

Players can participate in a putting competition on the practice green and a pitch or chip competition on the driving range from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., $1 per putt or pitch. Teams can sign up for the "Beat the ‘Pros'" competition, pitting their team against a team of four local "pros." Cost is $40 per team.

There will also be a "Closest to the Pin" competition on Hole #11 for golfers to test their skill and accuracy. Mulligans are allowed on this par three hole. Cost is $1.
