BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT 4, RIVERKINGS 3 - 11/12/08
J.J. Martin's power play goal with 35 seconds remaining in the contest sealed the RiverKings' fate, as Bossier-Shreveport beat Mississippi for the third time this season, this time by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday, November 12th, at Bossier City, Louisiana. The loss evened the RiverKings' record to 5-5-0 going into this weekend's pair of games at home against Oklahoma City. Mississippi had rallied from a 3-1 first period deficit to tie the contest at 3-3 after two periods, only to have Martin's goal decide the contest after David Simoes was called for holding with 1:34 left in the game. For the RiverKings, Jeff Nelson scored a power play goal for a 1-0 lead 3:30 into the game. Garrett Larson scored a power play goal in the RiverKings' second period comeback, followed by Louis Dumont's league-leading third shorthanded goal of the year at 15:56 of the second for the 3-3 tie. Goaltender Kevin Beech saw his season record drop to 5-4-0 with the loss, stopping 14 of 18 shots on goal. Mississippi fell to 1-3-0 against Northeast Division teams this season and the loss was the first for the RiverKings in the month of November (3-1-0).
TWO WINS LAST WEEKEND AGAINST ROCKY MOUNTAIN AND WICHITA
Mississippi ran their most recent win streak to three with a pair of victories last weekend, 5-2 at home Friday night, November 7th against Rocky Mountain, and 6-2 at Wichita on Saturday night, November 8th. Friday against the Rage at the DCC, Brad Bonello scored two goals and had three points in leading the RiverKings to their fourth win of the season. Kevin Beech stopped 25 of 27 shots on goal in the victory, posting his fourth win of the year. The win raised their home record to 3-2-0 and it was their second victory in November.
Saturday, Bonello and Bobby Chaumont each scored two goals and had three points apiece in the RiverKings' second victory of the season against the Thunder. Beech stopped 19 of 21 shots on goal in his fifth win of the year (5-3-0) and the RiverKings took advantage of three power play goals (3-for-7) to break open the contest in the second period. The victory also evened the team's road record to 2-2-0 and was Mississippi's third win in November.
EVEN STEVEN IS THE GOAL HERE
With Wednesday night's result, the RiverKings have now scored 34 goals and allowed 34 through ten games of the season, scoring 3.4 goals for and the same number against.
HE'S BEEN A BAD, BAD BOY
David Simoes is second in the CHL in penalty minutes at 64 and is first in the league in major penalties at ten. David has 50 penalty minutes in his last six games, a streak that is the second-longest active streak in the CHL.
LIFE ON THE BEECH
Kevin Beech ranks tenth in the CHL for goals-against-average at 2.87. Beech is second in the league in minutes played at 543:20 and ranks fifth in the circuit in saves made at 209.
DON'T BE "SHORT" WITH DUMONT
Louis Dumont is the CHL leader in shorthanded goals with three, including his "shortie" Wednesday night at Bossier-Shreveport that tied the game at 3-3.
HE'S A HELPER
New acquisition Matt Summers has six assists in his last six games, dating back to his time in Laredo prior to coming to the RiverKings in a trade on October 30th.
RIVERKINGS HAVE STAR POWER
Two RiverKings are among the leaders in the CHL's Three Star Awards category. Louis Dumont is ranked number one with 18 points and Bobby Chaumont is tied for ninth place with ten points.
"I WANNA BE FIRST"
When scoring first, Mississippi is 4-2-0 for the season.
ISN'T THAT SPECIAL
The RiverKings' special teams work continues to improve on the stat sheet. Mississippi's power play is now ninth-best in the CHL and has improved to 17.1% after a 2-for-7 night in Bossier-Shreveport on Wednesday. The RiverKings' penalty kill is at 80.5%, putting the team eight among CHL rosters in that category.
OTHER NOTES:
When leading after two periods, the RiverKings are 4-0-0, but are 0-4-0 when behind after two periods. At home, Mississippi is 3-0-0 when ahead after two periods, but are winless (0-2-0) when behind after forty minutes. In shootouts this season, the RiverKings are 1-0, having defeated Oklahoma in a shootout, 3-2, on October 24th.
OKC COMES BLAZING IN FOR TWO
Oklahoma City comes to the DeSoto Civic Center this weekend still in first place of the Northeast Division and is two points below Colorado in the Northern Conference standings, where the RiverKings sit in fourth place. Wednesday's win by Bossier-Shreveport over the RiverKings tightened the division race to two points, 18-16 for Oklahoma City over the Mudbugs.
ROAD WARRIORS-TO-BE
After this weekend's games at home, the RiverKings will also host Tulsa on Tuesday, November 18th, before embarking on the longest road trip of their year. Mississippi will play the next eight games away from home, before coming back to the DeSoto Civic Center for a two-game set against Texas on December 12th and 13th.
