Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings scored all three of their goals on special teams and in the process won their third straight in a 3-1 defeat of the Youngstown Steelhounds Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. In the RiverKings' two victories over the Steelhounds this season, eight of their nine goals have either been on the power-play or short-handed. Tuesday night, the RiverKings scored two with the man-advantage and one on the penalty kill.
Dorian Anneck scored the first power-play goal of the night at 4:57 of the first as his pass through the slot was deflected in by a defender's skate. The goal was Anneck's team leading 11th of the season as the first period ended 1-0 with the RiverKings enjoying a 16-4 shots advantage.
Anneck's stay as the undisputed goal leader on the team didn't last long as Ryan Campbell took a puck that snuck past the Youngstown point-man and scored short-handed at 2:11 of the second period to make it 2-0. Not only was it Campbell's 11th of the season, but it was his second short-handed goal of the season and the sixth over-all for Memphis.
Two minutes and 40 seconds later with his team on a four-on-three power-play, Derek Landmesser fired a slapshot past Steelhound netminder David St. Germain to expand the home team's advantage to 3-0. That is what the scoreboard would read until 10:15 of the third when Bill Mosler steered a centering pass from behind the net from Kelly Sickavish spoiling the RiverKings' shutout bid.
But that is all the goal spoiled, as the RiverKings kept the score 3-1 until the final horn. Goalie Guy St. Vincent stopped 24 of 25 shots to improve to 6-6-0. The RiverKings outshot the Steelhounds 32 to 9 in the first and second periods combined and 44-25 for the game as they climbed to within two points of the second place Steelhounds and five points of idle first place Bossier-Shreveport. The Steelhounds went scoreless in five power play chances against the RiverKings penalty kill. Memphis has not given up a power-play goal in the last three games with their opponents going a combined 0-for-15 in those three games, all wins.
The RiverKings will embark on a home and home with the Tulsa Oilers to close calendar year 2005 this weekend. The team will play at Tulsa Friday night at 7:30 and then come home for a 5:05 game with the Oilers on Saturday, New Year's Eve, at 5:05.
