HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (7-2-1) extended their point streak to six games behind the goaltending of Dan McWhinney as they knocked off the Huntsville Havoc (6-4-1) 3-1 on Saturday night.
The RiverKings wasted little time getting on the board. Charles Lachance tallied his third goal of the season just 3:35 into the opening frame as he slid the puck through the legs of Kevin Genoe to put the visitors on top 1-0.
In the second, the RiverKings continued the offense. Daniel Sobotka tallied his second goal of the season with a slap shot from the point that beat Genoe blocker side on the power play to give the RiverKings a 2-0 lead with 10:53 remaining in the second. In the waning moments of the period, the visitors struck again. Tom Craig ripped a wrist shot past the blocker of Genoe on a three-on-one to send the RiverKings into the second period ahead 3-0.
After the teams traded chances in the third, the Havoc struck late in the period. With a scramble out in front of Dan McWhinney, Justin Cseter put the puck past the RiverKings' netminder to cut the RiverKings lead to 3-1, but the visitors held on to collect their second victory of the season over Huntsville.
Dan McWhinney (4-2-0) stopped 30 of 31 shots against in the victory. Kevin Genoe (2-2-1) turned away 26 of 29 shots in the loss.
The RiverKings return to action on Tuesday morning to take on the Mississippi Surge for the team's annual Face Off Field Trip game presented by Belhaven University. The puck drops at 10:35 a.m. with all the action airing live on the America One Sports Network.
