Mississippi RiverKings News Release

The RiverKings have won six games in a row and have played their best hockey of the season over the last couple weeks. They will try to continue that trend with two games in Youngstown against the SteelHounds this weekend. The games on Friday and Saturday begin at 6:05 p.m. The pre-game shows begin at 5:55 p.m. on Y 96.1 FM.

The RiverKings lead the Northeast Division with 37 points. The second-place SteelHounds have 35 points, but they have played one more game than the RiverKings. The evenly-matched clubs have split their four meetings this year in Southaven.

WEEK REVIEW (2-0)

Friday: Mississippi 6, Texas 3

Louis Dumont opened the game with a shorthanded goal at 6:28 of the first period to give the RiverKings an early lead. But the RiverKings scored another shorthanded goal on the same penalty kill, as Aaron Davis drilled home his 13th of the season at 7:07 to make it 2-0. After their power play ended, though, the Brahmas got one back. Tyler Skworchinski netted his fifth of the season at 7:53 to make it a 2-1 game.

The RiverKings next scored the prettiest goal of the night. Steve Slonina and Ryan Campbell worked a 2-on-1 to perfection, making four passes on the Brahmas' half of center with Slonina finally burying his fourth goal of the season at 14:05 to restore the RiverKings' two-goal lead. However, Eric Main potted his first goal of the season with 2:37 remaining in the first to make it 3-2.

No one would score again until the beginning of the third period, when Dumont registered his fifth of the season at 1:36. Rick Kozak got into the act on the power play at 5:00 by sliding home his 14th of the season. Justin Kinnunen scored his fifth goal of the season at 7:07 on the power play to make it a game once again at 5-3. Still, the RiverKings salted the game away with Darrell Stoddard's second goal of the season on the power play with 5:24 remaining.

Saturday: Mississippi 3, Texas 1

After a scoreless first period, Zach Pearson scored his first pro goal 3:24 into the second to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead. The Brahmas responded right away, however. Grant Jacobsen scored his fourth of the season at 5:58 to tie the game.

But Dumont put the RiverKings ahead for good with his sixth goal of the season at 7:45 of the second on a power play. Derek Landmesser gave the team an insurance goal on the power play with his fourth goal of the year at 4:42 of the third period.
