(Southaven, MS) --- When it comes to fan experience when watching a hockey game in person, the Mississippi RiverKings are second to none in the Central Hockey League. The fact was recognized during the recent Summer Conference in Phoenix, Arizona as the RiverKings were named as Game Operations Franchise of the Year.

The recognition notes all that happens around the actual game on the ice, from the items displayed on the video board to the events that take place in the building before the game, between periods, and after the game; everything that helps enhance the experience of coming to watch the CHL Northeast Division champions at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

Among the special events that took place during the 2008-09 season that came under the Game Operations department were Ducks Unlimited night, when the RiverKings and DU helped set the Guinness world record for "largest mass duck call," indoor fireworks, provided by Randy Bass and High Tech Special Effects during the New Year's Eve celebration on December 31st, and the activities surrounding the annual Elvis Night event to honor Elvis Presley's birthday.

Game operations involves the total fan experience during a RiverKings event as well as the coordination of those elements to insure they enhance, but do not detract from, the game being played.

RiverKings Director of Business Operations Ab Mattice says it's an honor to be named the league's Game Operations Franchise of the Year. "The RiverKings take pride in offering our fans a well rounded night of entertainment," Mattice said. "It is non-stop action from beginning to end, on the ice as well as in the building, which we think gives our fans a good bang for their entertainment dollar."

In charge of coordinating the RiverKings game operations was Joey Thorsen, who serves as the team's Game Operations/Creative Services Director. Thorsen believes his mission is to ensure RiverKings fans have a memorable experience. "We want kids, parents, grandparents and everyone in between to have a great time. Everything we do: from our music, videos, on-ice promotions, in-stands promotions, giveaways, etc. all goes towards that goal."

Thorsen adds, "This award that we won is a nice way of letting me know that we are doing a good job, but my ultimate goal is to please the fans. I hope that we have achieved that goal this past season. The RiverKings have the best, most dedicated fans in the CHL, and they can without a doubt expect bigger and better things from us next season."
