Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN --- The Youngstown Steelhounds made it a four point weekend with a 4-2 win over the Memphis RiverKings Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The RiverKings power play unit continued to struggle as it went one for 11 and a combined two for twenty for the weekend. The Steelhounds opened the weekend with a 5-4 shootout win on Friday. The RiverKings return to action next Friday and Saturday with home dates against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.

The game featured 216 combined penalty minutes, 152 of that coming in what can only be described as a line brawl. Tempers had been festering both nights and they came to a boil at the 19:44 mark of the third. Twelve separate fighting majors and 10 separate misconduct penalties were doled out to 10 different players. Both goalies were even dismissed from the game after getting involved.

Back to the game itself, Youngstown scored first on a Jeff Christian power play goal at 4:17 of the first. Travis Banga made it a 1-1 game on a power play goal of his own at 15:58. It was Banga's second of the season. The Steelhounds, like the night before, would not allow the RiverKings to gain a lead as they scored a pair, including a short-handed tally by Chris Richards in the final 2:20 of the first, to take a 3-1 lead.

RiverKing defenseman Mark Cole scored his first RiverKings goal when he snuck one underneath Steelhounds goalie Jeremy Symington from the left point at 5:05 of the second to cut the lead to one. Richards completed a four goal weekend closing out the scoring at 19:54 of the second on the power play.

Rookie goalie Ben Conway started for Memphis and gave up three goals in the first period to take the loss. Larry Sterling relieved him to start the second and stopped 20 of 21 shots. Symington was the winner, making 24 saves on 26 shots.

The Steelhounds improved to 2-0-0 with the win while the RiverKings fell to 0-1-0.
