Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - The Rayz welcomed over 5,400 fans to the American Bank Center on Saturday night to kick off the 2006-2007 hockey season, but the Laredo Bucks spoiled the party. A three-goal second period lifted Laredo past Corpus Christi as the Bucks beat the Rayz 4-2 on opening night. Saturday's contest was the lone game on the weekend schedule for Corpus Christi. The Rayz will now head to Rio Grande Valley to take on the Killer Bees next Friday night, and return to the American Bank Center to host the Austin Ice Bats on Saturday. It will be Halloween with Harley Davidson on Men's Night, Presented by Time Warner Cable and Classic Rock 104.5FM. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.

Ryan Carter got the goal scoring started at 7:53 of the first period on a beautiful setup from new Rayz captain Matt Turek. Turek held on as he coasted down the right side and sent a pass through the goal crease to Carter who was planted on the right side of the net to slam it home for the first goal of the season. The teams then sat through a lengthy 27-minute delay after a check in the Laredo zone shattered a pane of glass. Once the teams returned to action Igor Agarunov knocked a rebound out of mid air and past Ron Vogel (25 shots, 21 saves) at 13:40 on the power play to tie the score at 1-1. The Rayz recaptured the lead on a Kevin Watters rebound tally at 18:34. Watters was the beneficiary of a brilliant spin move by Justin Quenneville to set up the play. The Rayz outshot the Bucks 14-10 in the first period and had a 2-1 lead.

In the second the Bucks turned the momentum of the game. Kris MacPhee scored the first of three second period Bucks goals at 1:16 to tie the score at two. The Rayz then had a two-man advantage for 54 seconds, but could not beat Bucks goaltender Nathan Marsters (33 shots, 31 saves) and the score remained tied. The Bucks took their first lead of the night when Serge Dube redirected an Oriel McHugh shot at 13:34 for a power play goal. 2:28 later Tyler Lawson beat Vogel with a shot from the top of the circle to increase the Bucks lead to 4-2.

The Rayz could not mount an offensive attack in the third period and neither team found the back of the net. The Bucks held on for the 4-2 win. The loss for the Rayz marked the first home opening game loss in the American Bank Center. The Rayz outshot the Bucks 33-25. The Rayz went 0 for 9 on the power play. The Bucks went 2 for 4.
