Mississippi RiverKings News Release

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Mississippi RiverKings took a two-goal lead into the first intermission, but could not hold on as they fell to the Knoxville Ice Bears 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night in Knoxville.

The RiverKings got on the board early in the first. Matt Whitehead hammered home a loose puck in the Knoxville zone past Kyle Rank to give the visitors the 1-0 lead at the 4:05 mark of the first period. Just two minutes later, the RiverKings struck again. Todd Hosmer collected an Ian Finnerty rebound and buried it past a diving Rank to put the 'Kings up two heading into the first intermission.

But Knoxville chipped away in a second period where the Ice Bears outshot the RiverKings 12-1. David Seagal ripped an Emery Olauson pass past Matthew Krahn to cut the RiverKings lead to one.

The Ice Bears did not wait long to tie it up in the third. Berkely Scott connected with Emery Olauson as Olauson beat Krahn on a two-on-one to tie the game at two. The two teams exchanged chances, but neither converted in the remaining 19 minutes or in the three-on-three overtime.

In the shootout, Nick Walsh converted for the RiverKings, but Emery Olauson matched his goal on the Ice Bears next shot to tie the shootout at one in the second round. In round five, with the shootout still tied at one, Ricky Helmbrecht beat Krahn blocker side to give the Ice Bears the win.

Matthew Krahn (3-3-0) turned aside 33 of 35 shots against in the loss. Kyle Rank stopped 18 of 22 shots against in the victory.

The RiverKings return home next weekend to take on the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. All fans who bring a canned food item to the game, will receive an upper bowl ticket for $5.
