Louisiana IceGators News Release
Columbus, Georgia--The Louisiana IceGators extended their win streak to five games Saturday night with their 4-2 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths (2-3-1). Unlike their previous two contests, the IceGators (7-1-0) never played from behind during this game. Louisiana's special teams play was a factor in this, as the IceGators killed five Columbus powerplays and scored during one of those penalty kill situations.
The IceGators return to the ice tomorrow when they host the Mississippi Surge in the Cajundome at 3:05 P. M.
"That was a great road effort by the boys," IceGator Coach Kevin Kaminski said after the game. "I'm proud of the guys' effort, especially on defense. (Goalie) Jesse Kallechy made two key saves in the third to get us the win. These guys are road warriors, and they are stepping up and sacrificing their bodies to win."
Andrew Howes picked up his third goal in the last two games five minutes into the game, giving the IceGators a 1-0 lead. The Cottonmouths' Orrin Hergott tied the score ten minutes later. Eric Tallent put the IceGators ahead early in the second period with a short-handed goal. Columbus tied the score again three minutes into the third thanks to a John Sullivan goal. The IceGators regained the lead nearly two minutes later when Denny Kearney scored off of a Robert Short feed. Matt Robertson added an insurance goal on an empty net with 34 seconds remaining in the game.
Kaminski praised his players' professionalism and commitment to their craft. "I'm finding more character in that locker room every day," he said. "Between having eight guys on injured reserve all of the travel, and changing time zones, they have had to deal with a lot of adversity. They have learned how to be pros really quickly, and I'm proud of them."
