Augusta RiverHawks News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Augusta RiverHawks traveled to Fayetteville Saturday night for their third game in as many nights. Still searching for their first win of the season, the 'Hawks were determined to turn things around against the FireAntz.
The RiverHawks managed to stay out of the penalty box during the first period and were eventually awarded a man-advantage, but the Team's powerplay issues of late continued as they were unable to convert. Fayetteville came out attacking, putting up 18 shots on RiverHawks' netminder, Robby Moss, all of which were turned away. Heading into the second period, the teams were scoreless.
Fayetteville was held to significantly less shots on goal in the middle stanza than the first, only adding eleven. On the other hand, the RiverHawks came alive, adding 16 of their own. Captain Matt Auffrey was finally able to break his current goal drought, recording a tally at 12:29 to put the 'Hawks up 1-0. Shortly after, however, the FireAntz managed to get one past Moss to even the score, 1-1 with only a couple of minutes remaining in the period.
After a tripping penalty, Augusta would find themselves on yet another powerplay opportunity but the end result would not prove advantageous, as the FireAntz' Josh McQuad recorded his second goal of the evening, shorthanded, to put his team up 2-1. At 14:12, the FireAntz received their first powerplay opportunity and, with only seconds remaining on the penalty, Mike Gurtler found the back of the net on a rebound to put Fayetteville up 2-1 with just over three minutes left in regulation. Moss would be pulled for the extra-attacker around the 1:30 mark of the period. Dennis Sicard would give the RiverHawks' their second goal of night at 19:29 to come within one, but Augusta would not be able to add any additional late heroics before the buzzer. Final score, 3-1 Fayetteville.
Moss faced a total of 40 shots on the night. Auffrey collected his first point of the current season, along with Sicard.
Augusta's next games will come on the road, as they travel to Huntsville to challenge the Havoc on Thanksgiving Day and the following evening, before returning to home ice on Saturday, November 24th to host the Knoxville Ice Bears.
