Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Knoxville, Tenn. - The Mississippi RiverKings couldn't make a 4-3 lead stick, and dropped a Friday night contest 7-4 at the hands of the Knoxville Ice Bears. It was a battle of Anniversary teams tonight as the RiverKings brought their 20 years of history into the Knoxville Civic Coliseum against the 10 years of operations from the Ice Bears.
Knoxville got off to a fast start in the first period, tallying two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game courtesy of Josh Boyd and Eric Satim. Ken Selby would get the RiverKings on the board and start a streak of three unanswered goals, accomplishing this feat for the second straight game.
Cameron Sault had the assist on the Selby goal, while Selby got his second point on the night by setting up Tibor Varga to knot the game at 2. Darrell Stoddard gave the RiverKings the lead for the first time in the game at 14:41 of the second period, rifling a top shelf shot from the slot after the set-up from both Trevor Karasiewicz and Robert Sich.
Rick Helmbrecht tied the score at 3-3 with a power play goal at 12:18 of the second period. Eric Slais and Eric Satim once again had assists on the play, and combined to form two-thirds of the three stars of the game. Satim finished with one goal and two assists (three points) while Slais ended the night with one goal and three assists (four) points to lead the Ice Bears.
Kyle VanderMale and David Segal then went back-to-back to put the game out of reach to stay, with the goal by Segal coming as Knoxville was short handed. Mike Tuomi was able to trim it back to a one goal deficit at 17:20 of the third period with a power play goal orchestrated by Ryan Ramage and Leland Fidler.
Despite the valiant effort however, the RiverKings were not able to overcome a series of own-zone turnovers and ill-timed penalties, and closed the game giving up two more tallies by Eric Slais and Emery Olauson to comprise the final score of 7-4 and fall to 1-1 on the season.
The next game for the Mississippi RiverKings is tomorrow night, Saturday, October 29th vs. the Columbus Cottonmouths. It's 'Pink at the Rink' night at the Desoto Civic Center with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear pink, as the RiverKings players will be sporting limited addition pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game with all of the proceeds going towards Pink Heals Memphis and Hernando Youth Sports.
