RiverHawks Win Second Straight Against Louisiana

October 28, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

They say it is rare to take both ends of a back-to-back series of games against the same team, but that is exactly what the Augusta RiverHawks did Friday night at the James Brown Arena as they defeated the Louisiana Ice Gators 4-1.

Forward Jim Gehring stood tall for the RiverHawks scoring three of the four goals for his squad and assisted on the other. Goaltender Peter Skoggard made 36 saves for his second win in as many nights, extending his regular-season winning streak to 11 games dating back to last season.

The win moves the RiverHawks into a tie for first place in the SPHL with six points. Thursday night the RiverHawks defeated the Ice Gators 4-3.

The RiverHawks got off to a quick start in the first period as Travis Dunstall made two beautiful moves in the offensive zone before squeezing the puck into the Ice Gators' crease where Jim Gehring managed to poke the puck over the goal line.

The RiverHawks extended the lead in the second period when Ed Snetsinger fired a low shot that bounced off of a skate in front of Gators' goaltender Dan Earles and slid past him. However, the two-goal lead would only last just over six minutes as Ice Gators' forward Robert Short fired in a puck on the short-side to make the score 2-1.

The rest of the period belonged to Gehring as he would score two more goals to give his club a sizable three-goal lead. First he took a pass from Dustin Cloutier and broke in alone on the Gators' goal. He fired a snap shot just inside the cross bar to give him his second of the game. Then just over a minute later he was on the receiving-end of a pretty passing play between Cloutier and Dunstall, depositing the puck into a gaping net for the hat trick.

Skoggard would steal the show the rest of the way for the RiverHawks, turning away all nine shots the Ice Gators mustered in the third period to maintain the 4-1 victory.

The RiverHawks now move on to Pensacola to play the Ice Flyers Saturday night. Fans can watch all the action at Somewhere in Augusta at the RiverHawks' first live watch party. Somewhere in Augusta is located on 2820 Washington Road. The puck drops at 8:05pm.
