SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings fell behind early and could not finish the comeback as they fell to the Huntsville Havoc 5-3 in Huntsville, eliminating them from the playoffs, on Sunday night.
Huntsville jumped out to a two-goal lead midway through the first. Ray Ortiz found the back of the net on a wrist shot that squeaked through the legs of Dan McWhinney on the power play to give the Havoc a 1-0 lead 11:34 into the first period. Two minutes later, Huntsville struck again. Eric Alexander's wrist shot deflected off a defenseman and over the shoulder of McWhinney to put the Havoc ahead 2-0.
In the second, Huntsville added to their lead early. Dominic Osman's shot from the point on the power play beat McWhinney to put the Havoc up by three. Four minutes later, Todd Hosmer brought the RiverKings back to within two, but Eric Alexander responded for Huntsville less than two minutes after for his second goal of the game to put Huntsville up 4-1 with 13 minutes left in the period. The teams then traded goals late. Daniel Sobotka's slap shot slipped past a scrambling Kallechy, but Justin Alonzo buried a rebound past McWhinney to end the RiverKings' netminder's night and give Huntsville a 5-2 lead going into the third.
The RiverKings cut their deficit back to two early in the third period. Mike Grace put a rebound off the pad of Kallechy over the Havoc netminder 4:30 into the final frame to bring the RiverKings within two. But Kallechy fought off the visitors' attack late as the RiverKings fell 5-3 in the third and final game of the series.
Dan McWhinney (1-2-0) stopped 16 of 21 shots in the loss before Matt Krahn (0-0-0) turned aside 12 of 12 shots in relief. Jesse Kallechy (2-0-0) stopped 25 of 28 shots against in the win.
