SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The RiverKings (0-3-0) peppered the Knoxville (3-0-0) net with a season-high 36 shots, but scored just one goal and lost to the Ice Bears, 4-1, Saturday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. It's the second straight win for Ice Bears over the RiverKings.
The Ice Bears struck first 5:47 into the first period when Tyler Klein converted on a one-timer from the slot. The play was set up with fancy passing between Klein, Ben Power and Berkley Scott, who both had assists. That lead held up through the first period, despite the RiverKings outshooting the Ice Bears 12-7.
The Ice Bears made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 9:23 to go in the second period. Joe Tolles rocketed a one-timer from the left circle over the shoulder of RiverKings goalie Adam Courchaine. The RiverKings settled things down towards the end of the period and finally found a way to beat Ice Bears goalie Bryan Hince with 2:10 remaining in the second. Matt Harrington squirted one off the post and in for his first of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1. Mike Grace and Mike Hayward were credited with assists.
The RiverKings continued to pressure the Ice Bears in the third, but failed to convert on two power-play chances. Then with 6:55 to go in the third Power broke loose on a breakaway and was tripped down by Paul Clancy, earning a penalty shot. Power converted by going five-hole on Courchaine to make it 3-1. He would add an empty netter for the a 4-1 Ice Bears win.
The RiverKings ended with 12 shots in every period; they had not had more than 11 in any of the first six period to start the season.
The RiverKings will return home and host the Huntsville Havoc at the Landers Center Sunday, Nov. 2 at 3:05 p.m. Fans can find a coupon for four free red-level tickets in this week's DeSoto Appeal.
