
Murdock Leads Fayetteville to Shutout Victory over Columbus

Kevin Murdock was superb between the pipes for the Fayetteville FireAntz, as he did not allow a goal in a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths.
Trevor Hertz was all over the ice for Fayetteville, as he tallied two goals in the win. Hertz found the back of the net 5:59 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville and again while on the power play 19:29 into the second to make the score 3-0 Fayetteville.
The FireAntz's penalty kill excelled, as Fayetteville gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.
The FireAntz racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and three majors for 47 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game Fayetteville had been spending in the box. The FireAntz stifled Columbus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Fayetteville featured an improved defense during the game. The FireAntz average 3.0 goals allowed per game.
Kyle McNeil also scored for Fayetteville. In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Mike Kavanagh, Corey Toy, John Clewlow, and Jan Safar, who each chipped in one.
The Cottonmouths forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. Columbus surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. By firing 36 shots on goal, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 27.7 shots they average per game this year.
Columbus was led by Matt Gingera, who took 10 shots.
Murdock recorded 36 saves for Fayetteville. The FireAntz registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Andrew Loewen rejected 24 shots on goal for the Cottonmouths.
